My name is Joe, and I completed a bachelor’s degree in environmental science
from the University of Notre Dame in May of 2009. I recently received my master's in paleontology and geology
from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.
In high school, I volunteered at a local community center, tutoring primary grade children in reading
. Many of these students came from lower income families who did not have the means to pay for professional tutors. This program allowed the children to keep on track with their peers, and in some cases even excel
, without financial burden. It was truly a wonderful experience to get through to an unwilling student, and see them finally comprehend whatever topic they were previously struggling to understand.
At Notre Dame, I volunteered one day a week at Clay High School, tutoring students in a variety of subjects. Once again, many of these students came from low-income families and had difficult home lives. Getting through to them could be a challenge, but again it was extremely rewarding when they were able to master a previously difficult concept. I tutored these students in a variety of subjects, including biology
, and history
, among many others.
In graduate school, I worked as a teaching assistant for two years. I taught the lab sections of three different courses. In addition, I presented classroom lectures, created lab exercises, and helped students master key concepts.
In short, I have always loved working with students and helping them to succeed. As a student myself, I know how difficult some concepts can be. Sometimes all they need is for someone to show them the concept in a different way, so that it clicks with them. That is always what I've strove to accomplish during tutoring sessions.
