I have been in the education field for over 15 years, in multiple positions and teaching areas. I have taught English/Language Arts, History, Social Studies, Computers, Journalism, Business and Marketing, Career Modular Technology and Driving at levels from pre-kindergarten through high school. My philosophy is simple - education is the way to success. My method is to work with and challenge the student in order to allow the student to achieve her/his greatest potential.

My areas of expertise would be English and History as I hold a current Illinois teaching certificate in these areas.

My work as a tutor spans all my career, but I have focused on this in the past several years. I am positive that I can help any student to improve their academic performance in an individual, one-on-one setting.

American History

I have tutored many students in U.S. History. It a fascinating area, and reading it leads to interesting conversation/discussion between myself and the student.

I am also a very strong writer, and can teach research and writing techniques.

Grammar

Grammar is something I enjoy teaching and know can help any student in this subject.

Reading

Reading is such an important thing, and I have learned in my teaching how to help struggling readers. Any student that needs help in reading will improve if I am her/his tutor.

Writing

I was a professional, published writer for eight years before I went into education. There is no doubt that I can be successful in improving almost any student's writing skills.

Geography

In one of my teaching positions, one of the areas I taught was geography to sixth grade students as part of their Social Studies program. This included intense study of the United States, South America, Europe and Africa, and included but was limited to learning capitols, rivers, lakes, etc., including spelling.

English

Has taught English for 15 years. Was a journalist prior to this. Capable in Literature, Language Arts, writing, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, etc.

Literature

Literature is one of my favorite things to teach, and I have done it now for more than 15 years. I will read the same material that you will read and thus should be able to help you in anything from analyzing to answering questions, as well as writing papers about the works.

Proofreading

My first job was as a professional writer. I wrote, edited, and designed the newspaper pages for my department.

I believe that my editing/writing/proofreading skills are excellent, and I know I can help any student improve in this area.

ACT Reading

I have a Master's Degree in Education and have taught many students in this area. I am an experienced teacher who knows how to get the best out of my students and look forward to helping in ACT Reading.

Elementary Math

To me, knowing Math is extremely important, and you cannot do any advanced Math if you do not have the basics down. And, I have been tutoring elementary Math students now for at least three years.

Elementary (K-6th)

In the past year, I tutored many students in elementary grades in English and Math. I can teach younger students anything. Most importantly, I have patience with them. All of my students improved at least 10 percentage points in their tests with my 1-On-1 tutoring.

Study Skills

I have been a teacher for more than 15 years. I know study skills. Over the past several years, I have worked with tutoring companies as well as teaching positions. In looking at my resume, my credentials to teach study skills should be clear.

Computer Science

I was a computer teacher in a grade school. I am able to teach most Microsoft and Apple programs.

Social Studies

I taught Social Studies to sixth graders for three years at Northridge Preparatory School from 1996 to 1999. I also taught Ancient History for a year and half during this time. More recently, I have tutored several students from Evanston School District 65 in Social Studies.
