In spite of the far reaching application of chemistry, especially organic chemistry, instructors have failed to generate interest in this most important area of science. This is primarily due to the perceived abstract nature of how it has been communicated over the years. As a tutor, one of my aims is geared towards fixing this false perception.
Not only do I place a lot of emphasis on effectively communicating the core concept of chemistry, equal energy is placed into linking the concept and practice. We show how organic chemistry is used in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, food science, but also in relationships, and clothes design. As a result my classes are usually fun-filled. I try to create an atmosphere that fosters creativity and outside the box thinking starting from first principle. Students tend to leave my class at the end of the day, but never the chemistry. I allow them to apply the core concepts among their friend while socializing or at home with their parents.
From my almost 6 years of tutoring undergraduates in general chemistry and organic chemistry I am convinced, that generally those who fail chemistry do not necessarily have an aptitude problem, but due to the disconnect between core chemistry and its application, they were not interested enough so as to maximize on their potentials. Having spend 6 years of my PhD majoring in Organic Synthesis and been a tutor in many organic chemistry courses, I have mastered not only the core concepts of organic chemistry, but more so how to effectively communicate it.
My tutorial sessions are geared to be relaxed, fun-filled, and engaging. Relaxed, because people learn better when relaxed and they are better able to think; fun-filled, because many will be disinterested if the classes are boring; and engaging, to allow for discussion. It is under the engaging part they will really learn. This where their why, how, and what will be answered. It is here they will see the beauty of chemistry, especially organic chemistry, fully express in its ubiquitous application.
