Don't let math or computer science be intimidating! My name is Mike, and I have a bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign and a master's degree in applied mathematics from the University of Illinois at Chicago. While attending the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign, I worked as a math tutor in the Office of Minority Student Affairs, where the classes that I tutored ranged from introductory college-level to advanced undergraduate classes, in both individual and small group instruction. During college and graduate school, I also took numerous computer science classes - all of this led to my career (fourteen years) as a software engineer in the financial industry.
My philosophy on tutoring has always been to know your audience. By knowing your audience well, you can put yourself in the shoes of the person(s) that you are tutoring, and understand their needs better. By identifying the strengths and weaknesses of the individual that I am tutoring, I can tailor the material specifically to them, and present it in as clear and easy to understand manner as possible. This approach has also helped me become successful at training people at work on complex computer systems.
I also do work on the side as a "semi-professional" musician (trumpet) in the Chicagoland area, so I am available for tutoring music theory, trumpet (and other brass instruments), and piano.
I look forward to the opportunity to work with you!
