Greetings,

My name is Evan. I was a student at the University of Illinois at Chicago studying Biomedical Engineering. I graduated from Whitney M. Young high school, one of the leading high schools in Chicago. I was a part of their Academic Decathlon team, a prestigious academic competition in ten different subjects encompassing Math, Music, Economics, Science, History, Art, Literature, Speech, Interview, and Super Quiz. I helped our team go to the National finals and win many awards.

Outside of engineering, I also pursue a side career in music composition. I was raised on classical music and more contemporary music from the 50's, 60's, and I do keep up with current hits too. My forte is using classical music theory in compositions that reach further than just the classical genre.

My favorite subjects to learn and to teach are Math, Music, and Computers. These three are my absolute passion and I would love to help others with these subjects as well.

I love teaching others; I teach my friends whenever they need help grasping and understanding something, or just a friendly helping hand. I'm very sociable and easy to get along with. As I'm very interested in a wide variety of topics within and outside of the subjects, I find it easy to engage those I'm teaching into the subject. I like explaining the subject at hand in a manner most familiar to the student, even explaining it in terms of other subjects that they are stronger at.

I am quite hands on when I am teaching. I like to give a lot of examples and also have the student try out a lot of examples themselves. I don't like to give up, and I don't give up on any of my students. I find that encouragement, supportive commentary, and praise are all essential and useful in the learning process, as it helps maintain the student's self esteem and also keeps them motivated and interested in the subjects.

I have worked with students of many ages with many different aims. The range spans 8 year-olds just starting to get their first grasp on math and reading concepts, to 60 year-olds who want to expand their horizons. I have an infinite patience and love for helping people learn.

I look forward to speaking with you, and I hope that we will work together well for the goal of better knowledge.

Thank you. Have a wonderful day.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

GED

I would like to help teach GED to someone in need of it. My mother herself had to go through the entire process of taking the GED courses and finally taking the GED examination, and along the way, I helped tutor her in it. In the end, she was able to pass the GED exam with a 93% and obtain her GED diploma.
Having gone through this experience, I believe that I am capable of teaching GED to someone who needs the degree. I am capable of working with people of all ages and am willing to help them with anything regarding the GED exam or classes.

General Computer

I am quite able with computers, in both hardware and software. I have helped numbers of people with computers, my friends and mostly my parents. Having also worked as a computer consultant for my university, I have a lot of experience helping clients with computer and technical problems that they encounter on campus. I've dealt with people ranging from the technically illiterate to the geniuses of the electronic age.

Martial Arts

I have a good amount of experience in the martial arts and I love sharing my knowledge with those who are interested.
I have a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, the time-tested Korean kicking martial art. I am also well versed in the use of the sword, specifically long sword and the Japanese katana.
I have a uniqueness to my martial arts. For me, I love to learn the martial arts for its art. It's wonderful and beautiful and complex. But I also learn it for the martial ability. I myself am not the biggest or strongest person around, I am average weight, height, and body size. However I have trained myself and others to be able to defend against and defeat opponents of larger size and greater strength.
I practice frequently and I have my own equipment to practice with, some of which I lend to my students and others which I help them find.

Piano

Having played the piano for over 9 years now, I am quite familiar with the basic and intermediate skills of the piano. Having learned the piano for so long, I have performed at several auditions. I have also taken A.P. Music Theory and received college level music course credit for it. Currently, I am engaged in composing music and developing my own skills and repertoire.
