Hello and thank you very much for taking the time to read my profile! My name is Elaine, I graduated with a BS in psychology (as well as a minor in chemistry) from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and I am currently a graduate student at National Louis University studying for my MAT. in elementary education. I also earned my TEFL certification from the TEFL Institute in Chicago.

The subjects I feel comfortable in tutoring include any elementary school content (grades K-8), high school chemistry, psychology, Mandarin, and ACT/SAT Math Prep. I also have experience working with ESL learners from my year as an English teaching assistant in Malaysia through the Fulbright Scholarship program. Finally, I have also had a number of years' worth of experience as a private violin/piano instructor and would love to be able to share the gift of music with more students (I currently work part-time as a piano instructor at Naperville Music).

Some people live their whole lives without getting a chance to discover their true passions, but I consider myself one of the lucky ones who do not fall into that category. For me, there is nothing quite like the thrill I get when I witness that look (that smile!) of excitement, wonderment, and deep satisfaction students get when the pieces come together and those proverbial light bulbs turns on. As a tutor, I promise to always do my very best to make learning as fun and fulfilling for my students and to help them reach their goals/create those "Eureka moments" for them.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Piano

I have been playing piano since I was 5 years-old and took private lessons for over 12 years. I tutored piano students throughout my high school years and have been teaching beginner-intermediate students at Naperville Music for the past year. My background is primarily in classical piano and contemporary/easy listening music.

Violin

I took violin & viola lessons for 8 years growing up. I was a member of my school orchestras all throughout middle school, high school, and for one semester during my freshman year of college. I had the good fortune of going to IMEA All-State two years in a row in Peoria. I was also a member of the Youth Symphony of DuPage - (including being first chair violist for my final 2 years) - for 6 years and a member of the Chicago Youth Symphony Chamber Orchestra program my senior year in high school. During my high school years, I tutored a few violin students and had a lot of fun playing in the pit orchestras for a couple Naperville's Summer Place Theater productions.
