Hello Learners!

My name is Lena and I have been a teacher, math and science coach, bilingual/ESL lead teacher, tutor, and administrator for 20 years. My education history includes a Bachelor's in Elementary Education from Loyola University, including endorsements in Math, Science, English, and Social Studies. My Master's is from Roosevelt University and my Bilingual/ESL certificate is from Western Governor's University. Currently I teach English as a Second Language to adult immigrants.

I knew that I wanted to be a teacher since I was six years old. Regardless of how each year passes, every day is a learning experience for me to grow and I wish to share this with others.

I enjoy working with individual students with academic and motivation issues, confidence in school, study skills, organizational skills, adjusting to different learning environments, and believing that learning how to learn is a vital and powerful tool. I also work with the family unit so that skills learned will provide long term results for continued success.

I do not have a tutoring office, so any quiet place is fine. I actually prefer working in the environment where the student will be regularly studying/doing homework. I am flexible in tutoring times, including weekends. I provide a free consultation session so that we can work together to create achievable goals. In addition to school work assigned, I may provide extra practice materials and assessments to monitor growth. After each session, I encourage feedback from students/parents so that I can make adjustments for ultimate success.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Social Studies

I taught Social Studies for six years at the middle school level. This included preparing students for the US and Illinois Constitution Tests.

Study Skills

My experience in teaching study skills is a culmination of preparing my students for standardized testing, classroom testing, and the U.S. Constitution Test. Results were higher than students who did not receive my assistance, as well students who were in other classes.

I teach students specific strategies for different types of assignments and assessments, including multiple choice, matching, oral, and essay exams. I also work on organizing notes, creating specific goals for each study session, and specific tools for learning vocabulary, reading comprehension, and mathematics.
