I have been tutoring for years, most recently for the University of Illinois College of Engineering tutoring center as my work study campus job. At the same time, I took on a host of private tutoring jobs from students looking for extra help. My first tutoring experience came in middle school when I helped students who were having a difficult time with their math classes. Along the way I've been able to continually refresh my skills when helping my two younger brothers with schoolwork.

I focus on math, physics, and computer science, but I have experience in many things and I'd be happy to negotiate a lower price if you'd like tutoring outside my core expertise. For example, my French was honed after 8 years of French class, plus one semester in France, but Portuguese is more of a hobby for me so I could offer very beginner-level help.

I have a location that is very comfortable but am also able to travel to your place of choosing provided it's along major Metra routes and el lines. Open and honest communication is always a policy of mine, with rates always negotiable. Teaching is a bit of a hobby right now, so your feedback is all-important to me, though as detailed above, I'm not a total novice!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

Math is one of my specialties generally for tutoring, being as I attended a math and science-focused high school and went on to major in engineering at the University of Illinois.

But specifically, I am an accomplished test-taker, and I can help students understand the strategies involved in selecting the right answer every time on a multiple choice test. My 36 on the ACT included a 36+ (none wrong) on the math section.

Computer Programming

I have a BS in Computer Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Beyond that, as programming is a more practical skill than computer science, my current job as a computer engineer demonstrates I have practical as well as theoretical chops. Last year at school I offered tutoring help to students struggling with programming assignments. I always used the style of helping promoted by our computer science department which is a kind of Socratic method, asking the student what specifically needs to be accomplished and what constructs would be appropriate to do that, and I intend to maintain that style in any programming tutoring I do here.

Computer Science

I have a BS in Computer Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I helped students in my tutoring job there with theoretical computer science classes which many find baffling, but I particularly enjoy. It's difficult to help students to figure out proofs, but I have developed a style that questions and prods them towards the solution without giving too much away.

Electrical Engineering

My original major in college was Electrical Engineering, for 1.5 years before I switched to the highly-related field of Computer Engineering. Even after eventually switching to Computer Science, I stayed conversant in the Electrical Engineering that I had learned by tutoring the elementary EE courses for the Engineering tutoring center. Therefore I would be confident covering most 1st-2nd year EE courses

French

I studied French for 10 years before going to the northern Picardie region of France for a study abroad semester in 2011. I was always a committed student, and then the sustained everyday experience of speaking and hearing French solidified my skills to a point where I sometimes got away without French people realizing I am American! Quite a feat if you've ever known les fran├žais.

JavaScript

In my work for the past year I have used javascript code on just about every page I've developed. In fact, I lean towards it for solving most problems I encounter, because of the depth of my experience with it. Starting in 2011 I have used javascript in a variety of personal projects and most notably my senior thesis was created using a variety of js libraries including jquery and paper.js in order to simulate a physics demonstration.

Logic

While majoring in computer science at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, I took a variety of classes in discrete math and logical operations. We even learned about the deep implications of formal systems of logic, and computability.

Web Design

I currently do freelance web design work. My experience with this type of programming came from both university and work. I created websites for many of my classes, most notably in "The Art and Science of Web Programming", and in my summer job as well as my 1 year at a job where worked on consumer-facing web pages. Thus my familiarity with the standard tools and languages such as javascript, jQuery, and HTML5 is rock solid.
