As a teaching assistant in graduate school, I discovered that I had a real knack (and, indeed, love) for explaining; I became popular with the students in my sections because of my clear, insightful presentations and lively style of teaching. Many would come to my office outside of class for extra help, and it became somewhat of a "hobby" for me to provide it to them.
Subsequently, I became involved in teaching for the Chicago Public Schools and later at the newly-opened Chicago office of a well-known national test preparation organization. I came to teach every type of preparation course that they offered, including GRE, GMAT, LSAT, MCAT, DAT, SAT, ACT, even NCLEX, and became the first supervisor for all the instructors in the Chicago area. In addition, I assisted the national office with the development and refinement of materials and programs used by all centers. When a major change occurred in the MCAT exam in the early '90s, I was asked (out of all the MCAT instructors in the organization) to run a national telephone question-and-answer hotline to assist students from all over the country on the new test and the company's newly-revised course materials.
I eventually made the decision to go out on my own as a "teacher in private practice", and have been helping students ever since with almost every conceivable subject. Indeed, I can say without any sense of immodesty that there are very few subjects in which I cannot tutor. (I've even helped a divinity student learn Biblical Greek and Hebrew.) Furthermore, although my specialty is math and science, I am highly skilled at written expression and have helped students to improve their writing for their course assignments. This has even led to my editing books written by students and others; many of these were published and won awards and developed a following. One even was made into an independent film which also won awards at film festivals.
In my personal approach to tutoring, I try to make things as simple and straightforward as possible for the student and to show them the best approach to learning the subject (and subjects in general). I help them to learn the material AND to learn HOW to learn.
P.S. An unsolicited testimonial:
I would like to start off by saying – THANK YOU!!! I stormed out on Sunday (as I always do) and didn’t even get a chance to shake your hand and say thank you. That’s why I’m sending you this email. My finals are over (declaring a moratorium on all schoolwork activity), so I feel more relaxed to write a few words.
When I was searching for a tutor, I didn’t know what to expect, since I’ve never worked with one before. I’ve had two so-called tutors responding to me, claiming they had PhD in chemistry. Once I emailed them my labs, they couldn’t analyze and solve essential equilibrium problems. And then you emailed...I can’t even begin to describe what a privilege it’s been working with you. Not only did you make my dreadful chemistry labs fun and exciting, but I learned so much in the process. I got a perfect score on all the labs, which really boosted my grade up. You exceeded all my expectations, and I feel like I really lucked out with you. I will miss seeing you once a week and talk about electrochemistry, kinetics, and radioactive decay, with occasional Star Wars themes. It's been fun knowing you!"
