I am a former 1st grade teacher and high school English teacher who entered corporate business as a sales trainer. I later received a Master's Degree in Training and Development with a concentration in Instructional Design. I always wanted to have some input into the way school books and training materials were written and now I have an opportunity to add fun and interactivity to learning materials, as I am responsible for designing and developing the books and training materials (including e-learning)used in instruction for adult learners. I also design, develop and facilitate Sports 101 Training Workshops in Football, Basketball, Baseball and Hockey. That's what I do for fun! I think it's clear that I love the field of teaching and training.
As a former elementary school teacher, I have experience teaching 1st and 2nd grade. In addition, for many years I taught basic reading and writing skills to high school students with low aptitude in these areas.
I am a teacher, trainer, educator, facilitator, writer and life long learner. I have an outstanding ability to understanding accents and often find myself serving as "interpreter" for other English speakers who do not understand foreign accents. I have exceptional listening skills and that helps. In addition, I have traveled to countries outside of the U.S. and I believe that getting to learn about other cultures helps me better understand and relate to people of different cultures. I also have a great love of the English language and often serve as unofficial editor for the teams I work with. Finally, my undergraduate degree is in English and I have extensive experience teaching English to students from many different countries.
My experience as an elementary school teacher, required to teach all subjects along with my experience as a high school teacher who often volunteered to work with students needing remedial help qualifies me to teach this subject.
In addition, as an instructional designer and trainer, who develops training materials for many disciplines, I am trained to approach learning through a variety of methods based on the ways in which people learn. Adult learners expect an approach that is age appropriate and geared toward their learning styles and that's how I approach learning.
Most of my teaching experience is in the area of high school English and Reading. I spent many years teaching grammar to high school students. In addition, as an Instructional Designer I spend a significant amount of time writing, designing and developing training materials for which a high level of expertise in grammar is required. In some ways, Instructional Design is similar to Technical Writing, a field that may be more recognizable by the general public.
