I have studied Japanese for nine years both in Japan and here in the United States. In college, I was a political science major with an East Asian studies concentration at Grinnell college. In my spare time, I was a beginning and intermediate Japanese tutor with an emphasis on culture. Culture is integral to learning a language as it influences how ideas are expressed. For a native English speaker raised in the States, or one simply not raised in Japan, the cultural aspects of Japanese must be understood as early as possible so one can learn that much quicker.
For example, in Japanese culture, the closeness of a relationship is very important. There are at least a dozen first-person pronouns and over a dozen second person pronouns as well as suffixes of varying politeness. Subtleties like these must be negotiated but learning Japanese can be a fun and engaging experience.
Besides Japanese, I also can assist with drafting political or governmental research papers and projects. Be it cyber warfare and nature of women in the military I'd be honored to assist your studies.
Lastly I have been a martial artist for 13 years with a black belt in the Korean art of Tang Soo Do with experience in teaching. I've developed and taught an age appropriate curriculum at a 6-week summer camp for children aged 6-13.
My hours are flexible and I would prefer to meet in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago.
I have been drawing since I was 6 years old and specialize in portraits and anime sketches. I was chosen to create the cover art of a college publication at the editor's request. Recently, I have accepted requests for portraits ranging from newborn babes for mothers to former military officials.
With students I am patient, being raised by an award winning musician I recognize the the creative process can take time to develop. I like to ask my students what they enjoy, a child may say "Iron Man" so I ask the child to draw "Iron Man". I believe art, being one's unique expression, must come from the heart.
In short, I love art be it experiencing it or sharing it.
I was a political science major with an emphasis in East Asian politics at Grinnell college. Besides collegiate projects ranging from US immigration policy to democratization in the Middle East I have also had real-word experience with policy creation. Notable employers have been State Representative Barbara Flynn Curie and former head of the Chicago 9/11 Commission Mr. Cortez Trotter.
Politics is a complex issue however it need not be so arcane or mysterious. I would love to assist any student that I can in breaking down core concepts, or drafting lengthy projects.
I have studied Japanese for 9 years, starting in high school and continuing into college via my East Asian studies concentration. I have also lived and Japan and as of 2013 was invited to accompany a former Navy Seal Team Six captain to Osaka for a month.
I have always had a deep passion for Japanese history and culture which influences my teaching style. I prefer to tutor beginning and intermediate Japanese learners so I may weave some of the more "foreign" aspects of Japanese culture into my lessons. I believe when these cultural aspects are understood the language can be acquired that much faster.
I have been trained in the Korean art of a Tang Soo Do for 13 years. Its techniques and forms are drawn from tradition Korean arts as well as Karate. A key principle is to "defend and strike" and so one of its nicknames is "the martial art with blocks that break bones". Besides Tang Soo Do I have experience in Wing Chun, Kali Eskrima and Pencak Silat.
I have taught people as young as 6 and taught youth camp over the summer of 2012.
