I have studied Japanese for nine years both in Japan and here in the United States. In college, I was a political science major with an East Asian studies concentration at Grinnell college. In my spare time, I was a beginning and intermediate Japanese tutor with an emphasis on culture. Culture is integral to learning a language as it influences how ideas are expressed. For a native English speaker raised in the States, or one simply not raised in Japan, the cultural aspects of Japanese must be understood as early as possible so one can learn that much quicker.
For example, in Japanese culture, the closeness of a relationship is very important. There are at least a dozen first-person pronouns and over a dozen second person pronouns as well as suffixes of varying politeness. Subtleties like these must be negotiated but learning Japanese can be a fun and engaging experience.
Besides Japanese, I also can assist with drafting political or governmental research papers and projects. Be it cyber warfare and nature of women in the military I'd be honored to assist your studies.
Lastly I have been a martial artist for 13 years with a black belt in the Korean art of Tang Soo Do with experience in teaching. I've developed and taught an age appropriate curriculum at a 6-week summer camp for children aged 6-13.
My hours are flexible and I would prefer to meet in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago.
