I love sharing my enthusiasm for learning with students, and I love to share my acquired knowledge within my particular fields of study. I tutor in English, architecture and art-- I have my bachelor's degree in English from the University of Iowa, an MFA in Sustainable Design and Interior Architecture from Columbia College Chicago, and an MFA in Studio Art from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

I have taught English as a Second Language through the English-use only method, which I have experience teaching to students overseas via Skype, and as a former teacher for In Lingua ESL centers. The English area of my tutoring also includes ACT Reading and English prep, reading, writing (non-fiction, fiction, poetry, essay, speech, copy), grammar, public speaking, and comprehension.

Through my fellowship at Columbia College Chicago's pilot MFA program, I became well-versed in architectural design, especially green design-- as I have experience working for the City of Chicago's Chicago Center for Green Technology as a volunteer and past consultant. Through my graduate program I have published my well-received thesis and written many term papers. I also hold my LEED AP certification in Interior Design and Construction, and can offer any tutoring to those who are preparing for their LEED accreditation exam.

In the area of art, I have scholastic experience through my studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where I specialized in video art and printmaking. I have teaching experience through Gallery 37 -- a Chicago-based apprenticeship program for 14-21 year olds-- as a former Lead Artist in Video Production. I currently paint watercolor and acrylic works, and have advanced skill in painting and drawing, including landscape, architectural drafting/rendering, and figure drawing.

I am willing to travel within 15 miles from Chicago at any agreed-upon location. Please let me know if you need to cancel within 12 hours before the lesson. For any studio art tutoring I have most necessary supplies. For English tutoring I do not use a textbook, as I customize lesson plans for each student. I would like an opportunity to work with you and share my passion for learning.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Reading

My highest scores of my ACT exam, albeit many years ago, were in English and Reading. I am great at relating to students various approaches to excellent reading comprehension and critical thinking. I am very familiar and comfortable with the ACT format.

Drawing

I have my MFA in studio arts, and I also have taken many graduate-level classes in manual drafting. I know how to draw in many media, and in many styles. I know figure drawing, architectural drawing, landscape, portraiture, comic, realistic and stylized.

English

I have my BA in English from the University of Iowa where my emphasis was in poetry and American literature. I have experience teaching ESL through In Lingua learning centers to all skill-levels and ages. I also have experience as a proofreader, fact-checker, writer and/or editor at several publications, including In These Times and The Oregon Voice.

ESL/ESOL

I have two year's experience teaching ESL using the immersion technique at the In Lingua language center. The method requires me to teach students using English only, and to discourage past techniques that rely heavily on text and grammar before conversation and interaction. I have also taught ESL at the former International Language Communication School in Chicago, Illinois. I have my BA in English from the University of Iowa.

Painting

I have my MFA in studio art from the University of Illinois at Chicago. I have a good knowledge in oils, acrylics, water color, and printing. I currently work on freelance design and I work mainly in watercolor and PhotoShop.

Proofreading

I have previous experience as a proofreader at a bi-monthly news magazine, and as the managing editor of a college newspaper.
