My name is Shawna, and I am a former teacher! I am passionate about teaching and education, both inside and outside the classroom.
I received my Teacher Certification in All-Grade Visual Art Education in 2007, and spent two years teaching in several long-term substitute positions (2 semesters in a high school art class, 2 semesters in a Kindergarten Moderate/Severe Special Needs class, and 1 semester in a 4th grade general education class, and ). I also worked as an administrator at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and spend my days educating college students where they live.
As for my tutoring approach, I like to spend time finding out a little about my students personally so I can tailor learning for each individual. I have extensive study skills and developmental knowledge, which helps me to teach to each individual student with consideration of age, personality, and learning level. I have a proficiency and a passion for students with special needs, including Aspergers/Autism, Down Syndrome, and students with special emotional/behavioral needs. I love working with students of all ages as well.
I am proficient and have experience in teaching the following subject areas: Art, Writing/English/Spelling, Elementary Science and Math, Art History, Microsoft Office, and Anatomy/Human Sciences.
As for my tutoring policies, I do often ask for feedback from my students. I do also ask for 24-hour cancellation notice, but I welcome makeup classes or reschedules as needed.
A few things about me:
-I am originally from Indiana (my hometown is called Farmland- that's it's actual name!)
-I love painting, writing, and pets
-I have lived and worked in Chicago since 2010, so I know my way around and I love it so!
-I am a very big fan of movies, laughing, and baseball games
Lastly, I can promise that I will work hard for my students, hopefully bring a little humor into the learning, and help you achieve your goals!
