Hello! I believe a tutor's role should be to cultivate and develop skills in a low pressure, relaxed environment. I also make it a point to reference the student's own school materials in order to preemptively tackle imminent concepts before they are taught in the classroom. This approach employs a patient, thorough, and careful review of new concepts. I believe most parents would agree that they would rather their child learn in a relaxed way and go on to succeed in the classroom, rather than struggle in school and only later have ideas clarified at home. Not only does this approach prepare the student for upcoming work, it also boosts both self-esteem and worth in the classroom by giving them the tools to make the most of their education.

As for me, after receiving my degree in English from Boston College, I recently finished up my M.A. in Humanities from the University of Chicago. My course history includes classes in literature, pedagogy, and academic and professional writing. As a relatively young graduate, I am intimately aware and sympathetic to the difficulties of formal education. This in particular is why I am devoted to tutoring; I hope to ease the transition from one grade level to the next of young students while instilling in them a love of learning that will benefit them for a lifetime.

By all means feel free to contact me and organize a friendly meeting to see if I am a good fit for your student. I very much hope to hear from you soon!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I received my degree in English from Boston College and continued my literary education in the MA program in Humanities at the University of Chicago. I am confident in my ability to prepare any student for the ACT. This specific test requires an understanding of the nuance of basic grammar. My methods include a re-emphasizing of sentence diagramming, or the breaking down of the sentence to it's essential parts. Suddenly, the most common reaction to an ACT English sentence-"why does this sentence sound funny?"-actually has an answer. Tips for time management, including accurate and efficient test taking methods, will also be emphasized.

ACT Reading

I received my degree in English from Boston College and continued my literary education in the MA program in Humanities at the University of Chicago. I am confident in my ability to prepare any student for the ACT. This specific test requires an understanding of the nuance of authorial tone as well as basic grammar. My methods include having students closely examine text without relying on questions for guidance; this approach fortifies their analytic skill set by (counterintuitively) looking at the bigger picture. Tips for time management, including accurate and efficient test taking methods, will also be emphasized.

Elementary Math

Elementary math is taught via a patient explaining of the concepts behind the exercises. This is followed by repetition of the execution of those same exercises. Also, teaching elementary math depends on the ability to verbally explain difficult concepts in several unique ways, helping students by clarifying the respective goals and formulas.

English

I received my degree in English from Boston College and continued my literary education in the MA program in Humanities at the University of Chicago. I have written two full, lengthy theses on literature as well as countless individual papers for various classes. Though it is difficult to pinpoint why I am qualified to teach something as broad and generic as "English," I can assure you that I am well versed in teaching all aspects of it: proofreading, grammar, comprehension, writing, etc. The methods for teaching each vary, sometimes immensely, but examples include sentence diagramming, analyzing authorial voice, and writing/revising short paragraphs.

Grammar

I received my degree in English from Boston College and continued my literary education in the MA program in Humanities at the University of Chicago. My grammars is at the level befitting a graduate student. I am confident in my ability to instruct any student in such matters through a re-emphasizing of sentence diagramming, or the breaking down of the sentence to it's essential parts. Grammar is usually taken for granted by a native speaker, so the best way to help someone is to define the mechanics of the English language (from something as simple as a subject to something as potentially unfamiliar as a gerund).

Literature

I received my degree in English from Boston College and continued my literary education in the MA program in Humanities at the University of Chicago. I have written two full, lengthy theses on literature as well as countless individual papers for various classes. My course history is dominated by literary courses ranging from the Medieval to the Modern, with an emphasis on American and Russian literatures. I am confident in my ability to recognize themes and tropes of all literatures and tutor students to do the same.

Proofreading

I received my degree in English from Boston College and continued my literary education in the MA program in Humanities at the University of Chicago. I have written two full, lengthy theses on literature as well as countless individual papers for various classes. As such, I am well versed in the process by which one edits, revises, and overall proofreads an assignment. I am also intimately familiar with MLA, APA, and Chicago formats.

Reading

I received my degree in English from Boston College and continued my literary education in the MA program in Humanities at the University of Chicago. Both degrees required extensive, difficult, and constant reading in order to bolster argumentation. Reading, at a basic level, is the understanding of grammar and the function of words themselves, and can be taught through sentence diagramming and an insistence on practice. At an advanced level, reading is taught through a patient evaluation of the goals of the writer (analysis, persuasion, etc.) and practicing recognition on the part of the reader.

SAT Reading

I received my degree in English from Boston College and continued my literary education in the MA program in Humanities at the University of Chicago. My grammar, proofreading, and overall writing are at the level befitting a graduate student. I am confident in my ability to prepare any student for any such standardized test. Tutoring will involve a thorough review of the test (types of questions, methods of response, etc.) and extensive practice of said test questions. Tips for time management, including accurate and efficient test taking methods, will also be emphasized.

SAT Writing

I took a class entitled "Academic and Professional Writing," a re-imagining of the techniques, tools, and tricks to improve one's own writing at any level, all of which can be applied to standardized writing. Tips for time management, including accurate and efficient test taking methods, will also be emphasized.

Spelling

Spelling is taught through basic, but efficient spelling rules (i before e, except after c, etc.) and supplemented with extensive reading practice. Children commit spellings to memory more efficiently when presented with multiple examples and frequent, but low pressure, spelling quizzes.

Vocabulary

I have written two full, lengthy theses on literature as well as countless individual papers for various classes. These studies, when coupled with my voracious appetite for reading, have substantially improved my vocabulary. Tutoring such a subject involves the use of flashcards (of age appropriate words) that are coupled with passages including said words. Simple, rote memorization alone is not enough for sufficient development of vocabulary.

Writing

My educational background has been rife with writing exercises and education. I have written two full, lengthy theses on literature as well as countless individual papers for various classes. In pursuing my M.A., I took a class entitled "Academic and Professional Writing," a re-imagining of the way in which we compose arguments for our audience. I hope to educate prospective students on the benefits of considering the "reader" of their paper, for it will give them a distinct advantage moving forward. Writing is best taught with weekly concept discussion and a single, brief homework assignment to facilitate practice.
