I am a writer and educator with a BA in English, graduate coursework in Creative Writing, and a Masters in Public Policy. I've written training manuals, scripts, poetry and more essays than I can count.

I have taught every age from pre-school to pre-retirement. I have coached in leadership skills and taught college freshmen composition, but mostly I've helped people with their writing and grammar.

If you're struggling with grammar issues, or not sure how to structure an argument, I can help. I will guide you through the writing process, from brainstorming ideas, crafting an outline, creating paragraphs that flow, and writing sentences that make sense, down to using correct spelling and knowing where to put your commas.

My passion is writing and sharing the love of writing. I can help you overcome the intimidation most people have over the blank page and walk you through the process from beginning to end. I want grammar to make sense, not just be a bunch of archaic rules. Most of all, I want you to be able to use language to communicate clearly and succinctly.

I won't force you to define a dangling participle, but I will show you how to write so that you will never have one in any of your papers!

Elementary (K-6th)

I was an assistant teacher in a Montessori preschool--so I am far more familiar with the learning needs and material for younger children. However, I have worked with older students as a volunteer and as a parent.
I use my understanding of different learning styles to try to approach the child from where they are, and use different tactics to reach them in ways they are comfortable.

English

I have a Bachelor's degree in English, I have taken graduate level classes in creative writing, and am an experienced writer, editor, and proofreader.

General Computer

Over the years I have helped numerous people learn to navigate the world of computers: whether it's basic stuff like file management ("Where did I save that Word document??!") to exploring the internet to tricks on using Word and Excel. I break down computers into simple, manageable bites of information, taking you at the level you are at now, and adding more skills as you get comfortable.

Grammar

Grammar is simply the rules that help us clarify our thoughts and communicate to others with clarity and ease.

I taught freshman composition at the University of Illinois, where I studied in the Creative Writing Masters Program. I also have a BA in English from Cleveland State University.

I have been freelance writing for the past year, and can help you tailor your writing to your specific needs, be it academic, business, or creative.

Literature

I was an English major who loves all kinds of literature from the great canonical works to modern classics. As a freshman composition instructor, I can show you how to peel the layers off a complex text and help you understand the crux of a work. We'll delve into symbolism and imagery and generally work on how a work of literature is relevant to today's reader.

From Shakespeare to Sam Shepard, we can tackle the Great Works and find the joy and pathos in these stories, and realize why they still are revered to this day.

Microsoft Windows

I have been an MS Windows user since we first emerged from DOS. I can break down the elements of Windows into easy components--from file management, saving and finding documents, to using a mouse, to how to use drop down menus.
I have frequently done informal coaching on navigating Windows to co-workers and colleagues, as well as assisting and sitting in on computer classes at the non profit training center where I served as Training Director.

Phonics

I taught in a Montessori pre-school for 5 years (in addition to teaching my two children to read). I have used both whole-word and a phonetics approach to teaching reading, using flash cards and sandpaper letters.

Proofreading

I taught freshman composition--both essay and research writing--while a graduate student in Creative Writing. I have a BA in English and am a grammar hound. I can quickly review your writing for the usual spelling, punctuation, and grammar, but I can go further and help you organize your thoughts and structure your ideas so that paragraphs flow smoothly, and you have the most cogent essay you can write.

Reading

I have an English degree and have had graduate school level classes in Creative Writing. I've been doing freelance writing for the last few months.
I became an English major because I adore losing myself in books! I'd love to share that passion with young people.

Theatre

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Theater from Cleveland State University, where I focused primarily on directing. Since moving to Chicago, I was involved in forming two small theater troupes: Wild Onion Theater, which did experimental, audience interactive theater, in the 80's, and I have been a writer, co-producer, director, and actor for Democracy Burlesque, a political sketch comedy troupe for the past 8 years.
When my children were in grade school, I coordinated a drama program with the classes, incorporating theater games and exercises.

Writing

I have completed graduate level coursework in Creative Writing at UIC in addition to having a Masters in Public Policy at DePaul. I received a BA in English from CSU.

I have been a freelance writer and playwright. I have excellent writing skills, and I have assisted numerous people of all ages in improving their own writing techniques. I work with you on your own assignments and help you come up with ways to frame your arguments and write sentences that flow smoothly.
