My students have come to refer to me as their mentor friend and an effective English tutor for foreign visitors and new arrivals in the United States as well as for current students in Chicago's school system. They have come to trust me and rely on my help and interest in their situation as they struggle to understand their lessons and assignments and (for the foreigners) their new home here in America. I break down complex language in their reading passages and assignments into simple, understandable terms so they can continue with the rest of their academic requirements on their own. I provide resources and leads to encourage self-directed learning. I coach them on accent neutralization and rudiments of daily conversations, among other critical needs, improving verbal and social skills in the process. I expose them to real-life settings that challenge their imagination, and the interaction, whether one-on-one or as a group, can be truly exciting.
My students are a very diverse group -- graduate and college scholars from Saudi Arabia, the Emirates and Poland, working professionals from Cuba and Poland, nurses and health care workers from the Philippines, Mexico, Vietnam, Bulgaria and Costa Rica and members of religious organizations from different mission countries in Asia. These students all demonstrate varying levels of language competency; I carry them through fun and rewarding exercises tailor-fit to their levels. This builds their confidence and strives them to acquire the language skills that enable them to improve integration into the US setting. I always incorporate components of culture about the US as a relevant feature in language instruction, leading into learning as an integrated process.
I also do tutoring in reading, writing and general language comprehension -- e.g., understanding news stories as they unfold in the media, providing in-depth backgrounds and perspectives to heighten students' appreciation and understanding.
Navigating life in America can be a terrifying experience for new immigrants. So I offer tutorial in English as a Second Language specifically tailored for immigrants. Proficiency in English will open more opportunities for employment and improve the ability to function in social circles. For those seeking naturalization, I also tutor in civics and US citizenship exam and immigration oral interviews, as well as in filling out the Form N400 application.
I graduated from the University of San Francisco, B.A. Major in English. My professional experience had been in advertising, journalism and marketing, and I taught mass communication in a university abroad. I hold 3 ESL/TESOL Certifications. I currently teach ESL to basic nursing assistant students in a healthcare training school in Chicago and IELTS to a group of foreign students. I also tutor at a Literacy Center in Chicago.
Given my diverse exposure in the world of communications, I have developed creative and meaningful approaches to tutoring...they make learning fun and a most rewarding experience, and a lifelong achievement for the individual.
In addition to ESL for Immigrants, I also handle tutoring lessons in literature, editing, writing for advertisements, press releases and newsletters.
Before I joined WyzAnt, I was already holding tutorial sessions in IELTS, with four students from the Middle East on homestay in the U.S. and who were enrolled in Intrax International Institute in Chicago. All four students have since passed the required target band levels to gain admission into U.S. universities. I taught the four basic language skills (listening, reading, writing, and speaking) with increasing concentration on speaking module in both academic and general versions of IELTS exam. Like all other tutorial tasks, I coached my students on strategies, techniques and tips to improve their task solving speed and efficiency and gain the necessary confidence in demonstrating their levels of English proficiency. I also introduced the students to the different accents and speaking styles of English native speakers -- IELTS being a United Kingdom/England type of exam, and compared with US residents' manner of speaking. Along with standard lessons, my students participated in practice tests on the four skills, after which time we assessed answers, launched interactive discussions, taped mock interviews for later critiquing and always, incorporated new words and phrases into their vocabulary lists.
