I taught at the collegiate level for 8 years at Notre Dame, the Illinois Institute of Technology, and, most recently, at the University of Chicago, where I completed a four-year fellowship in 2012. At U. of C., I taught humanities courses in philosophy and literature to first-year students and a graduate/undergraduate course in philosophy of physics. I received the highest marks in student reviews in every major category of evaluation (reviews available upon request). When my fellowship was over, I chose to leave academia to pursue other interests, although I still do original research in the philosophy of physics.
The key to being a good teacher is being a good listener. In order to help a student develop as a thinker, one has to take the student seriously as a thinker in the first place. This is true with regard to the humanities and equally so with mathematics and the sciences. Gaining expertise requires mastery of a conceptual landscape, not merely skill with techniques.
My goal is to help the student develop a deep and fundamental understanding of the subject matter, which, in turn, will make the student a better problem-solver.
I'm qualified to teach a variety of subjects. My research specialty is in the philosophy of physics and is heavily mathematical, so I'm comfortable teaching all mathematical subjects and most of the sciences (physics, in particular, of course). I also have an undergraduate degree in literature and have taught writing for many years.
I have taken graduate courses in the history of molecular genetics. I have also taught undergraduate humanities courses (at the Illinois Institute of Technology) centered on Darwinism (where we read the Origin of Species). I have also edited a collection of historical and philosophical articles on the history of molecular genetics, Creating a Physical Biology.
I am qualified to teach advanced logic courses at the undergraduate level. I completed graduate courses in basic, intermediate, and advanced logic (at Notre Dame), and I have taught introductory logic and philosophical logic at the collegiate level (Illinois Institute of Technology). I also taught logical concepts in the humanities courses I taught at the University of Chicago.
I have a PhD in philosophy of physics and an Masters in physics from Notre Dame. I have published and continue to publish original research in the top journal in my field, Studies in the History and Philosophy of Modern Physics. I have taught philosophy of physics at Notre Dame, the Illinois Institute of Technology, and the University of Chicago.
