Hello, my name is James. I have a Masters's in Music Education, have been playing piano for 40 years and teaching for 25 years. I teach songwriting and improvisation as well. I was trained in classical music, started playing jazz in college (with the jazz band) and have written dozens of songs in many styles. I also have music therapy background and truly believe in the transformative power of music. Having taught for so long, I know that anyone can learn music at any age. There is nothing more satisfying than sitting at a piano and improvising jazz, blues and yes, even classical music. The typical age to start with lessons is between 7 and 11 but that can vary depending on the student. It is certainly never to late. Theory is also important so I incorporate it into the lessons as well. Most people are aware of research studies showing the correlation between music study and other academic subjects. I have seen this correlation first hand. I have taught privately as well as group piano and try to encourage my students to participate in some kind of ensemble playing. This includes rock bands. I hope you decide to learn how to play the piano and always encourage everyone in their musical endeavors.
