Dear Parents and Students,
WHAT IS MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY?
"If you cannot explain it simply, then you do not understand it well enough." -Albert Einstein
This is my vision for you, and for our tutoring sessions. I am an engaging pre-medical student with a bachelor's in Philosophy-Neuroscience-Psychology from Washington U. in St. Louis, and a Master's in Medical Science from Loyola U. in Chicago.
WHAT IS MY TEACHING/TUTORING EXPERIENCE?
I have 3 years of experience teaching in a classroom setting, and 5+ years of teaching in a 1:1 mentoring setting. I taught AP Biology, AP Physics, SAT, Geometry, Algebra, Public Speaking, and Study Skills in a formal classroom setting at Key Education Center and Genius Consulting. In a 1:1 mentoring setting, I taught all of the above subjects plus organic chemistry, chemistry, MCAT, SAT, ACT and study habits--all on a freelance tutoring basis, but also through formal mentoring programs such as The AHEAD Leadership program (Los Angeles, CA) and the Crotona Achievement Center (Bronx, NY). At Crotona, I worked closely with undeserved educational communities, where I learned how to work effectively with difficult or unmotivated students. I believed in them. Not only did I help them to see new meaning in their studies, but I was able to transmit to them a new life-vision and a desire for excellence. Currently, I am a part-time instructor of college level biology at Loyola U. Chicago.
WHAT SETS ME APART FROM OTHER TUTORS?
I am engaging, enthusiastic, creative--and very, very patient. I grew up in a large family of eight, where at the dinner table, someone's elbow was constantly tickling my ribs. As the older brother, I learned how to work closely with eight different personalities and perspectives, and how to communicate with people with diverse learning styles..
I am good at making difficult concepts in accessible. My goal is not just for my students to achieve technical mastery of the material, but also an intuitive grasp of it. To do this, I often employ visual diagrams and analogies to aid in this process.
Finally, I incorporate "study habits" into my tutoring sessions. I help the student think critically not just about the material, but also about himself or herself. I believe that "if you keep doing what you're doing, all you're going to get is what you've got." In the process of helping the student with the subject matter, I help them arrive at more effective study strategies, and concrete resolutions for the upcoming week in time- and self-management skills.
What are my proficiencies?
Within the realms of math and science, I am proficient in pre-algebra, geometry, algebra, calculus, physics, biology, chemistry, immunology, anatomy/physiology, biochemistry, organic chemistry, neuroscience, and related topics.
Within the realms of humanities and writing, I am proficient in philosophy, bioethics, religion/bible-study, persuasive writing, college personal statements, medical school personal statements, and resume writing.
Within the realms of test-prep, I am proficient in SAT or ACT all subjects, SAT II, and MCAT studying.
Finally, within the realms of self-improvement and music, I am proficient in guitar, piano, study skills, time-management, "principles of Leadership and Self-Management", virtues and character development, public speaking, interviewing skills, PowerPoint, Excel, and Prezi.
Thank you for your time and consideration!
