My name is Emily and I am a Cum Laude graduate alum of DePaul University, School of Music. I have previously taught through CPS, educating young minds in music performance, theory, and history.
During my time at DePaul University, I took every opportunity to expand my horizons and challenge myself in any way possible. I took level 200+ classes, participated in every club, workshop, and lecture I could fit into my schedule, and attended every concert the various performing groups hosted. I have therefore become a very diverse, pragmatic, adaptive, and intelligent individual who encourages and fosters the same excitement and intrigue in learning that I possess.
I am exceptionally passionate about music, and have a very thorough knowledge of beginning-advanced music theory (from basic notation through chord/roman numeral analysis, progressions, modes, secondary dominants, counterpoint, etc. etc.). I also possess a thorough knowledge, and corresponding resources, of music history from the Medieval and Renaissance eras through the current 20th century, Post-Modern eras. I somewhat specialize in the microtonal and neoclassicism concepts, as I find them particularly fascinating.
My primary instrument is the Saxophone, but I am very proficient on all woodwinds and many brass instruments. I am fluent in piano, percussion and bass guitar. I am very educated in successful method books, solo and ensemble literature, practice techniques, and instructional methods to best encourage skill development.
I am a woodwind pedagogy specialist. In addition to playing the clarinet for over ten years, I have taken method classes at DePaul University to further hone my skills.
I have played in various musicals and received the grade of an A in each clarinet and woodwind pedagogy class.
During my time at DePaul University, I took two years of Aural (Ear) Training and received the grade of an A for the duration of the time. The materials covered ranged from interval work, chord recognition and progressions to rhythmic lines and two-voice rhythm dictations.
I am a woodwind pedagogy specialist. In addition to playing the flute for over fifteen years, I have taken a special year-long class perfecting embouchure, extended techniques, and implementing adequate teaching methods, i.e. how to recognize and isolate specific issues
I have played in various musicals, bands, and private gigs that incorporate the flute and took lessons from my Student Teaching cooperating teacher to play, and coach, very high level literature in a Music Academy environment. Additionally received the grade of an A in each flute method class, woodwind pedagogy class and Alexander Technique emphasizing the flute posture.
During my time at DePaul, I took a variety of classes having to do with Elementary and Secondary general music as well as Music Traditions (World Music, Alexander Technique, and Music Technology) and vocal/instrumental methods. I also took Music for the Exceptional Child (implementing general music to students with mental and physical disabilities). I received the grade of an A in all of the above stated classes.
I additionally was employed through CPS (grades K-8) educating students in a General Music Capacity and taught units such as Notation, Instrument Recognition, dance varieties, and basic instrument and vocal performance.
During my time at DePaul, I was required to take two full years of Musicianship (History and Theory) ranging from Ancient, Medieval, and Renaissance era music through Contemporary and 20+ Century music. I received an average grade of an A- for the entire two years. Additionally, I have previously tutored my students (grades 5-8) to pass my general music class and to prepare for the year credit requirement in high school. Finally, I have taken auxiliary classes and attended volunteer lectures by various authorities on subjects such as Music and the Brain (concerning the myelination process in the brain and successful practice techniques), Great Composers in History (and how their music is utilized in modern arrangements) and Counterpoint (a Baroque approach to writing music).
I have played the Saxophone (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Baritone) since third grade and have been taking private lessons throughout my education. I sat first chair alto saxophone in my high school band as well as numerous Honor Bands and Competitions. I was also part of at 10 piece Jazz Combo that played an opening set for B.B. King during his "Birthday Bash" Tour. In college, I played various roles in a Wind Symphony and was selected to partake in a 20+ Ensemble showcasing contemporary literature. I additionally took two years of lessons receiving the grade of an A throughout.
I currently give private lessons out of my home studio to a small group of interested students I met through my time Student Teaching.
During at my time at DePaul, I took two years of Aural Training that incorporated Ear Training and Sight Singing into one class. I am able to sight sing intervals alone, or in the context of a song. I am most proficient singing from printed notation, though I am also able to distinguish pitches, intervals, and melodic lines by ear and repeat them, in tune.
