Hello all!
Thanks for checking out my profile! I am a recent graduate of NIU, with a degree in Music Performance on percussion. In my years of schooling, I've had some wonderful experiences gaining knowledge from world class musicians/educators such as Fareed Haque, Art Davis, Kelly Sill and Ronald Carter (to name a few). During my last two years, I had the opportunity to play with the world renown NIU Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Ron Carter, during which I shared the stage with jazz artists such as Terrell Stafford, Sean Jones, Steve Davis, and many more.
As a musician, I've had extensive experience performing in many genres including jazz, rock, funk, hard rock, blues, latin musics and pretty much anything else you could name! As an instructor, I like to leave my lesson plans open to the student. I like to cater my teaching to the individual in order to make sure that I am guiding the student in their desired direction, and not forcing them into any one mold, as many teachers I have had in the past tended to do!
Whether it is performing or academic music skills you might require, I am confident I will be able to help students of all ages reach their desired goals!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

As a graduated music performance student, I have completed extensive theory and arranging courses. I have written many compositions of my own, mostly in a jazz small group context but also have arranged many jazz standards including a big band chart. Through my schooling I have developed extensive knowledge for writing and arranging.

Drums

I graduated from Northern Illinois University with a BMA in percussion performance, emphasis on jazz studies. I have studied privately for the past 10 years and have been teaching drums for about one year. I also was the drummer for the NIU Jazz Ensemble (top band) for my last two years in school.

Ear Training

In high school, I completed an AP music theory course in which I scored a 5 (highest score) on aural skills and theory. I also completed classical and jazz aural skills courses at Northern Illinois University within my first two years.

General Music

As a graduate of NIU with a music performance degree, I have gone through all theory and aural skills courses, as well as history and electronic music classes. This has given me extensive knowledge both as an educator and as a musician.

Music History

I have been listening to jazz/classical/contemporary music since I was a young child and have always been interested in the lineage of musicians. Throughout college I took history of western music classes from ancient to contemporary (3 courses) as well as a jazz history and a jazz literature class. History and lineage was stressed throughout every music course I took!

Music Theory

I took an AP music theory class in high school and got a 5 (best score) on the AP test. I tested out of theory 1 and 2 at NIU and finished 3 and 4 my freshman year. Sophomore year I took a year of jazz theory and passed no problem. Junior year was a year of jazz improv, dealing with more advanced theory and once again I encountered no problems succeeding.
