Having completed all of the coursework for a PhD in historical musicology from the University of Iowa, I have a breadth of educational background, expertise, and experiences. I received a BA in English from a competitive liberal arts school, Lawrence University, where I tutored writing and edited the newspaper. I can help you learn to hone in on written content and identify important material when reading, and I have the patience to work with you to develop these skills from wherever you are. From Lawrence, I moved to the University of Iowa, where I earned a masters in trumpet, learning all aspects of jazz and classical music performance. With my background in trumpet, I have extensive experience teaching young brass musicians.

As a historian, I can help you sharpen your reading, and connect facts to stories, narratives to ideas, thesis to support. Building on my broad liberal arts background, I have completed doctoral seminars in German history and contemporary art history and would be particularly eager to help college students trying to understand cultural history. For junior high and high school students, I will be antic and zany enough to follow you on your ADHD zone-outs and guide you back to the here and now. For college and older, I have the training to hone in on the key facts that every educated person should know using the paradigm of cultural literacy.

I'm not *just* a nerd--even though, yes, I am a nerd; I also play in an indie band and love walking and running along Chicago's many paths. If you're within reasonable biking range for me, we can negotiate a discount for non-snowy months. I'm in Chicago writing a super long dissertation about electronic music in New York in the late 1960s, and I'm so excited to tutor because it's a break from staring at a computer screen. My specialty is music history, and I have taught at the college level for six years--four as a teaching assistant, and two as an overenthusiastic community college instructor serving students from diverse backgrounds, aptitudes, and interests.

I won't just build your skills, I will help you find the spark that makes whatever is vexing you feel exciting, vital, and connected to what you've already learned and what you want to become. As a tutor, I will strive to develop buy-in from you (and, if applicable, your parents) and will supplement your course readings with interesting PDFs, YouTube videos, museum visits, or library assignments.
