Last year I completed my Master's work at the University of Chicago. My thesis was on European piracy in the Early Modern period which gave me a great chance to study European politics, technology, economics and social organization. Although it may be easy to dismiss piracy as a trivial subject, I focused on piracy because it sits at a unique intersection of historical trends: European colonialism, state-ism, democracy, capitalism and technological progress. And perhaps most important of all, it was exciting to study and talk about pirates all day. This use of fun and unique topics is my general approach to studying and explaining historical trends.

While I was in school I worked at the Oriental Institute in Hyde Park, where I got to physically touch history everyday. I currently work in the outdoor museum of Chicago as a tour guide, which gives me a chance to share the amazing history of Chicago with locals and tourists alike. I love bringing history alive and strive to make historical inquiry exciting and accessible.

American History, European History, Geography, Government & Politics, World History

European History

My Master's thesis was on Early Modern European activities in the Atlantic, specifically of European piracy. This required extensive knowledge of and research on European social, political and economic history. Previously as an undergrad my focus was on Early Modern France with a specific focus on the Napoleonic period. Thus, most of my academic life has been focused on European history.

World History

My Master's work on European piracy in the eighteenth century necessitated research and study of nations around the world. I studied both prior to and after this period in order to fully understand and appreciate the causes and effects of European expansion during the eighteenth century. As such, I am quite qualified in World History.
