Algebra 1
I have helped students succeed in algebra for the past 25 years, both as a tutor and as director of a non-profit tutoring center. Algebra is using what you know to find what you don't know. It requires memorizing steps toward a solution. I help students to understand how each of the steps is simple in itself and these steps follow a logical order. By consistent practice, organization of notes and real life applications, I aim to show that anyone can master this subject. I am both motivational and challenging and quickly gain the trust of students so as to give them the tools they need to advance.
Basketball
I have been playing basketball all my life, since I was a boy, and have coached middle school and high school teams. What I think makes sports most fun is the constant challenge to improve and the strength one feels from being part of a cohesive team. I like to focus on developing fundamentals and building fitness and these really help both individual confidence in the sport and improve one's contribution to the team.
Bible Studies
I have been a daily reader of the Bible for the past 25 years. I specialize in the New Testament and also explaining the significance of the texts of the Old Testament in the context of the new. I am both motivational and challenging with students and gain their trust by showing them that they can succeed with an effort.
Drums
I have been teaching drums for the past 25 years and specialize in helping my students quickly learn to play together with others. I majored in percussion at the New England Conservatory of Music and was principle percussionist of the Rhode Island Symphony. I have also played drum set professionally and can teach keyboard percussion instruments, especially vibraphone, and also timpani.
Ear Training
My objective with ear training is to help the student identify relationships between notes based upon familiar songs and well-known melodic patterns. I also try to help the student become more aware of their own vocal range so that their own voice can be a reference for remembering melodies and intervals. A very basic use of the piano can also be helpful, as the piano keyboard makes note relationships and melodies visible. With these techniques, I believe we will find success! I majored in music at the New England Conservatory of Music.
