My name is Randi, and I am an experienced guitar teacher who has a fun, yet thorough and engaging approach to teaching music and guitar playing.
I am a recent transplant to Chicago by way of NYC. I've worked at some of the most prestigious schools teaching children guitar (The Dalton School, 92nd St Y, NYC Guitar School), as well as established a private clientele of wonderful students with whom I developed strong relationships.
My approach comes from a singer-songwriter perspective: By playing songs the students like, they stay interested and motivated, which is the most important part in making progress!
Creativity is highly encouraged. Many of my students write their own songs while learning the basic tenets of guitar-playing, as well as some music theory. With songwriting, the child not only learns how to play the guitar, but also song structure (how to organize thoughts and concepts), grammar and creative writing (alliteration, rhyme schemes, cadence and more). Your child may not be interested in songwriting which is fine since learning to play their favorite songs gives countless hours of joy on its own. The most important thing is that your child enjoys the whole experience!
As someone who has worked with children in many different capacities (including my field work for Child Psychology courses at NYU and volunteer tutoring I currently do at a school), I have a way of bringing out each child’s potential and my encouragement has always been a source of self-confidence for them. I look forward to bringing out the best in your child through music.
