Whether it's college application essays or basic grammar, ACT reading or phonics, I love tutoring. I have taught or tutored in many different arenas, including high school teaching and tutoring, summer camps, K-8 after-school programs, and caring for my elementary- and toddler-aged nieces and nephew.

I'm currently teaching summer school humanities to incoming high school freshmen. For two and one-half years, I taught high school government, law, economics, U.S. history, philosophy, and ACT reading. My high school students' ability levels ranged from fifth grade level reading to high school level honors. My eighty juniors all had to pass a difficult test on the U.S. constitution in order to graduate, and they all passed. One student in my law class had a one-on-one paraprofessional in every class but his electives, and law was unfortunately considered an elective. I met with him once each week after school to give him the one-on-one tutoring he needed for law.

As a high school teacher, I was known as the smiley, silly, but strict teacher with high expectations for my students. Students who had the option to take additional courses with me after taking one class with me did so. I believe that every student has the capacity to succeed academically, but that students learn in different ways and must have the opportunities to learn via the methods that work best for them. Whether you learn best through visuals, hearing, touching objects, creating art, reading, or writing, I will adapt my method so that you can succeed in the subject we study.

As a camp counselor, I nurtured my campers, but I also taught them responsibility and ensured their safety. As a specialty counselor who taught drama and directed plays, I was an extra in the cabin of 12-year-old girls where I lived. This meant that the two other counselors living in the cabin focused on caring for the girls. I cared about the girls in my cabin, and, therefore, I helped maintain order and teach them responsibility in addition to having fun with them. Outside the cabin, whether I was teaching five to fourteen-year-olds acting exercises, playing theater games, or directing them in the camp plays, we had fun, but they learned something in a safe environment.

Finally, I spend a fair amount of time with my nieces and nephew, and they have often asked me if I can teach at their school. As honest as kids are, my nieces and nephew apparently think I am good enough to spend five days per week with them. I view that as the ultimate compliment.

Jodi’s subjects

ACT Reading

I taught ACT reading for two years in a charter school on Chicago's South Side. I wish I had learned, before I took the ACT, the skills I taught my students. The skills are effective reading and study skills that can be applied to any reading that a teacher / professor assigns.

I love biology, but I'm not an expert. If you need help with reading and understanding or remembering biology concepts, I can help.

Criminal Justice

I am a lawyer who has been interested in criminal law since I took a class in undergrad. For the last two years, I taught law to high school seniors. We focused most of each year on criminal law, both substantive and procedural.

I've always excelled at English, whether it's reading, writing, spelling, grammar, or sentence structure. I took AP English in high school, and I took an English course for English majors in college, although I did not major in English. In the college course, we peer-reviewed our papers, and I discovered that I was a better writer than my English major classmates!

Government & Politics

I majored in political science, I'm considered "highly qualified" under No Child Left Behind to teach political science, and I taught government and law for two years.

I am a total grammarian. My parents taught me well, and I will teach you!

Microsoft Word

In this day and age, we must be proficient with computers and, especially, word processing. I've used Microsoft Word in all of my jobs in the last ten years, and I'm quite comfortable with it.

I learned to read and spell using phonics, and I teach children the same way. I first teach them the short and long sounds for vowels, then the soft and hard sounds of consonants, and then the consonant blends. I use a workbook that allows students to learn in multiple ways by pronouncing words using images, writing, and reading.

I'm a skilled writer and a complete grammarian. I can't read a paper or article without correcting the grammar first. Proofreading is so important, whether you are submitting a paper for school or a cover letter and resume for a job. I will set you on the path to proofreading for life!

Public Speaking

As a child actor, State Forensics Finalist, litigator, and teacher, I've had my share of public speaking experience. I still get nervous almost every time I speak to a new group of people, but I'm able to do it eloquently and confidently. I've taught acting and directed children, ages five to fourteen, in camp plays. The quietest camper in my cabin portrayed a fabulous Alice in our camp's production of Alice and Wonderland under my direction and encouragement.

I was the kid who would get ready for school quickly in the morning, just so that I had a few extra minutes to read. I'm a huge fan of Harry Potter. I would love to help you find joy in reading, but if we can't do that, I will help you learn to understand whatever it is that you have to read.

Social Studies

I am certified to teach any of the social studies to high school students, which means I must have the elementary level building blocks for this subject as well. I am also endorsed in history and political science, which means that I'm "highly qualified" under No Child Left Behind. I majored in Political Science in college, obtained my Master's in Education with a concentration in history, and I passed content exams in both political science and history. I've taught high school world history, U.S. history, philosophy, civics, economics, and law. I'm a social studies fiend!

My mom has told me that when I was just learning to spell, I was terrible, and she thought I'd never be a good speller. I eventually figured it out, however, and I can help you figure it out as well.

Study Skills

During my Master's in Education program at UIC, I learned how to teach, using a variety of methods. Once I assess a student's strengths and weaknesses, I develop a tool box of study techniques for that individual student. I wish someone had done this for me when I was going to school!

There are multiple ways of learning vocabulary. My student and I find the best way for him or her, whether it's through flash cards, reading, writing, or other methods.

My AP English teacher once said to me, "I wish I could make you more confident in your writing." I remember this comment because once I went to college and read my peers' papers, I realized what a strong writer I had become. With my students, I work on the essay structure, word choice, grammar, and providing sufficient support for arguments in order to create a strong paper that will make the students proud.
