Vocabulary

First, I am a poet. As a poet, I would be unemployed without a wide vocabulary, as words are my tools. I bring a poet's delight in language to the task of developing vocabulary (with a professor's understanding of curriculum), to best order tutoring time.

Grammar

My students learn to approach grammar as a foundation to effective communication, rather than an obscure system of rules separate from meaning.

Reading

I actively identify subjects of interest to the student, then provide relevant short excerpts. We also will discuss the reading curriculum in his school, so as to better support it. As needed, we will identify the central subject, discuss the argument used, as well as identify the purpose of the piece.

Writing

I have been a published writer since the age of 15, when I published a poem in a state teacher's journal, then wrote a column for the local newspaper. I am a graduate of UIC's Writer's Program (MA), and continue to write and publish. I have also taught university-level composition for over 21 years. It is a pleasure to share this challenge and craft with my students.

English

With over 21 years of university teaching, I have experience in both literature and composition. I have also tutored high school and adult ESL students privately and as an Upward Bound tutor-counselor. I am also a published writer, and bring the perspective of writing for an audience to my work.

ESL/ESOL

Many of my university and adult students had ESL backgrounds, starting with a group of Vietnamese refugee students I had for group tutoring as an undergraduate. I DO NOT hold a TEOFL or TESOL certificate. My strength is in English conversation.

Literature

My students learn to puzzle out meaning through an understanding of the elements of specific genres, then use their critical abilities to evaluate each piece of writing. I aim to reduce guessing at a teacher's response, and to become more confident in the student's own thoughtful response.

Proofreading

My students learn specific skills in becoming accurate proofreaders for their own writing. Students look for the purpose of a piece, to skim for specific types of errors, and to above all check grammar against sense.

Study Skills

Whether a child or an adult returning to school, study skills are about using time effectively and enhancing the ability to learn. What is the expectation for a given assignment? How does a course break down? Can the SQ$R reading method be useful? What kind of binders or electronic aids can be useful? What is an outline? My methods break through clutter (physical and intellectual), and help students succeed.

Public Speaking

As an adult, I have worked as a professional actor. I hold a SAG/AFTRA union card. I have performed on stage, in video industrials, theatrical and independent feature films. As part of my training, I developed my own voice using the Lessac method. As a college composition professor, I often incorporated oral presentations as a way for students to learn to present their arguments.
