Effective English, Writing, and Test-Prep Tutoring

As your tutor, I'll help you identify the areas you most want to improve, and we'll build a plan together to help you achieve those goals. Whether it's bringing up the level of your vocabulary, improving the style and personal voice in your writing, fixing those pesky comma splices, or figuring out what the heck is going on in "Heart of Darkness," I've got your back. In our sessions, I'll help you develop the critical thinking and self-assessment skills that make for success in any field. My goal is to help you see and be able to use language as tool you can put to good use rather than a chore your teachers make you do.

I love being an educator, and with me you'll get both experience and creativity. I enjoy using new technology and teaching tools, and yes, even social media, to get the best results. One of my favorite exercises uses Twitter to have students compose 140-character sentences with impact. Of course, this is all about you--what you want out of your education, and what you want out of our time together. I'm excited for us to get started and to see where we can go.

Grammar

Grammar is more than a set of rules. We'll build a new way of approaching the uses of language, and identify consistent patterns of errors that can be corrected easily while growing your confidence in your own language.

Reading

Reading comprehension is a skill like any other. With practice, you'll be able to draw out meanings, visualize relationships, and get more out of all of your reading.

Writing

I have taught composition courses at both traditional 4-year and 2-year community colleges, and published my own work both in print and online.

English

My teaching experience has largely been in the transitional period between high school and college-level English. I'll help you build the skills that teachers will be looking for as you reach higher levels in all your subjects.

Literature

I have a wide basis in global literatures in English, and my particular focus is in late-19th century and 20th century British literature.

Proofreading

Accuracy and style. We'll improve your sense of your own voice in writing, while learning self-assessment and evaluation in this critical step in the writing process.

SAT Reading

Test preparation is about more than memorizing lists of facts. I'll help you build your reading comprehension, improve your strategic approach to testing, and help calm those shaking nerves.

SAT Writing

Clarity, cogency, and completion. Writing tests are challenges for you answer questions completely and think critically under stress. We'll build your own writing process into one you can rely on in any situation.

ACT Reading

ACT Reading is all about comprehension--reading quickly and building a full understanding of passages without necessarily backtracking too often.

ACT English
