Background in Drawing, Painting and Photography:
I have a BFA in painting and drawing with electives in photography, printing and costume design. I have worked as a medical illustrator for over 20 years. My mother put a blank pad of paper and a box of crayons in front of me when I was a toddler and I have been drawing ever since - although my tools are now a tablet, stylus and computer. I can tutor both classical drawing (pencil/paper) or digital using Adobe Illustrator software.
Background in Sewing and Knitting:
Sewing was something I learned from my mother at an early age. I have experience with sewing fitted formal wear for clients (weddings), tailoring, pattern making and sewing home decor items such as curtains, slip covers, cushions and machine pieced quilts.
I learned to knit at the age of 10. I was knitting for years before it became popular again. In the past 10 years it has become a passion and I have pushed myself to learn new techniques. Lace knitting is a specialty of mine and I continue to seek more and more complicated designs to work on.
I have 40 years of experience knitting. My skills include all basic knitting such as knitting to gauge, stitch patterns using knit and purl stitches, increases and decreases, yarn-overs and cables on straight or circular needles.
Advanced skills include lace knitting from charts, magic loop knitting in the round, stranded color work, and double knitting.
I have been crocheting for several years and my skills include all crochet stitches, working from written and charted patterns.
I have 40+ years of experience sewing. My skills include pattern layout on fabric grain and matching fabric pattern repeats (stripes, plaids, etc.) as needed, sewing various types of fabrics from sheers to heavy weight denims and leather or leatherette, and garment fitting and tailoring.
Garment sewing skills include buttonholes and button attachment, straight and stretch stitches, installing zippers or piping, setting in sleeves and pockets, creating french seams, machine or hand hemming and pressing for a professional look.
Home decorator skills include many of the above as well as measuring for drapes and curtains, creating pinch pleats and rod pockets.
I have experience sewing garments from t-shirts to wedding dresses and tailored suits and home dec items from pillow covers to drapes and slip covers.
