Hello Potential Students!
I've got over 10 years' experience teaching voice, viola, and violin, and also have been sewing and quilting professionally for the past 17 years. If your thread is in a tangle, or if your concerto needs work I'm the teacher for you.
I started teaching strings privately in 1992, and was the head of the strings department at a music school in Cincinnati from 2001 to 2004. During that time I was also working for a professional costume shop designing, sewing, and maintaining sewing machines.
From 2004 until 2010 I traveled the country as a musician, actor, and costume designer for professional theatres from Alaska to Virginia. I loved traveling, but wanted to make roots, and Chicago seemed like the perfect place!
I still maintain my professional connections at theatres across the United States, and still sew, sing, play, act, and direct professionally.
If you are having trouble setting up your sewing machine, threading your machine, want to learn beginning sewing and quilting, or are interested in a particular advanced technique I would be happy to help.
If you want to sit higher in the violin section, improve your music theory knowledge, or make you high "C" really soar I'd be happy to help.
My method for teaching music theory is completely tailored to the needs of the student. If you are trying to learn to read music for the first time, or are interested in starting to write music, and every level in between. I've worked with students at all skill levels and with many different objectives. Many learned an instrument "by ear" and found it limiting when working with other musicians, and others have been in a music theory class and needed that extra bump to pass. Music theory can be fun, and understanding the structure and math of music benefits you musicianship and your smarts!
I have extensive experience in dress making, hand sewing, quilting, and clothing construction. I can teach you anything from sewing on a button or making your first quilt, to making a wedding dress or learning free motion quilting. I have been a professional seamstress, costume designer, and quilter for 20 years. I've got experience with a diverse array of sewing machines, from antique treadle machines, to sergers, to modern computerized embroidery machines. I worked with the Cincinnati Costume Company as a seamstress from 2000 to 2006, and have worked as a stitcher and designer at theatres from Alaska to Virginia for the last six years. Through this costume design experience I've worked with all types of media (including leather and metal), and in many techniques. I have experience in hand embroidery and sewing, and have tackled original designs with a lot of complexity (including historic recreations, battery powered lights, and fantasy costumes).
I studied musical theatre at Millikin University in Decatur, IL, and have been a professional actress for 15 years. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Theatre/Social Sciences from Ashford University as well. I am a member of the Screen Actor's Guild and have performed all across the country on stage. I have done work for major Hollywood production companies and have appeared as and extra and in small roles in movies. I was also featured in three national commercial campaigns for Best Buy in 2009. I am also a regular guest director and choreographer at the Round Barn Theatre in Nappannee, IN.
I have been playing the viola and violin for 26 years. I have over 10 year experience teaching stringed instruments and voice, and am currently the assistant principle violaist in the Chicago Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra.
I was the head of the string department at Angel's School of Music in Cincinnati, OH from 2002 to 2004 and had a studio of 25 students. I also tutored for Jamestown Public Schools in Jamestown, ND tutoring violinists, violaists, and cellists from 1992 to 1996.
I have over 10 years experience teaching voice and violin in private studios and in the public school system (Jamestown Public Schools, Jamestown, ND 1992-1996: music tutor). I also studied voice at Millikin University in Decatur, IL as part of the Musical Theatre Program. I have trained in classical technique as well as modern singing. My specialization is creating a dynamic and adaptable instrument with a focus on proper usage and breathing.
