Hi, my name is Ying (pronounced "ing") but you can also call me JoAnn. I come from a part of China called Hunan, which is very famous for its delicious (and spicy) food. But I have also lived in Beijing, Xian and other parts of China. I love being in America and I love teaching Chinese to Americans.
Many people think that learning Chinese is hard, but I think it can also be fun. My goal is to make your lessons interesting and fun and give you easy ways to remember many important words and phrases. I have a lot of experience teaching people how to learn Mandarin and I use a system that starts with a few basic words and then just builds naturally from there. This system can work whether you are a student or a business person. We will use words and phrases that are relevant to your life and that are the kinds of things you would say to your friends and colleagues every day. Maybe you love sports, or music, or want to be able to introduce yourself at a business meeting in Beijing or Shanghai. You will be surprised at how much you can learn! And along the way you will learn something about Chinese culture and food, and also about some of the things that are different between America and China. In addition to speaking, we can also work on writing and reading if you are also interested in learning how to do these as well.
Here is a little about me. I am 23 years old and a native of China. I grew up in Changsha, which is a big city in roughly the middle of China. My mother is a business executive and my father is a lawyer. I completed my university degree (in Law) in a city called Xi'An, which is an ancient capital of China and home of the famous Terra Cotta Warriors. My university is well known for teaching foreign languages and that is how I became fluent in English. After college I worked at a law firm in Beijing, and then I came to Chicago. I recently completed my graduate law degree (LLM Degree) at Chicago Kent College of Law with a concentration in Financial Services Law, and I now work for a Chicago law firm. My areas of specialty include corporate law, mergers and acquisitions and investment management. Some of my hobbies are playing the piano, traveling, and playing ping pong, but since coming to Chicago I have also become a hockey, basketball and football fan and I enjoy watching to the Hawks, Bulls and Bears games. American sports are much more exciting than Chinese sports!
