I can tutor students at different levels of experience. I specialize, however, in older students, middle, high school, and even college level. I have a B.A. from Dartmouth College and an M.A. from the University of Chicago. I can teach across a variety of disciplines, particularly the liberal arts and social studies and can tutor certain levels of math, up to basic statistics. I can also teach study skills. My main focus in making sure that students can not only memorize facts but also come to understand why people think that those facts are indeed facts. In other words, I teach critical thinking. In my day job, I study social psychology - with an emphasis on how people process information in order to navigate their social worlds. Some of what I study is applicable to my tutoring. In general, however, I stress basic learning, building on existing knowledge, and being willing and able to work with information even if you're not sure where it comes from or how universally true it is. I stress mental flexibility and personal confidence, skills that are important whether you're memorizing multiplication tables or writing a critical essay. Most of all - I stress working with individual minds, their strengths and limitations, and seeing my students grow and change as they both learn and learn to learn.
