I retired from university teaching in June, 2012. Taught at Northeastern Illinois University's Department of Communications, Media, and Theatre. I also lectured at Northwestern University, Roosevelt University, and Columbia College in Chicago.

My most rewarding teaching experiences were with students who needed extra help. Tutoring for students who qualified for my tutoring under ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) received many extra hours of personal tutoring. Other students without disabilities who fell behind in class received fewer hours of tutoring. On average, both types of students improved low initial grades of 'F' to 'B' by the end of the tutoring sessions.

Student evaluations from students in all my classes were uniformly excellent. Students at Northwestern University selected me as one of the 10 Top Public Speakers in Chicago.

I also worked at a number of Chicago Public Relations agencies. My specialties were speaker training, media relations, and electronic technology product publicity.

As a corporate magazine editor I supervised all aspects of the writing, editing, and production of a 48-page monthly magazine. I was also editor and publisher of a monthly technical newsletter.

American History

At the University of Chicago I was a full-tuition Victoria Adams History Scholar. (In High School I was the only student in my graduating class to score 100 on the state-mandated civics examination.)

I have written 10 published books on American Transportation History.

These books led to many appearances on radio shows, TV programs, and at historical society meetings.

Business

I am a graduate of the University of Chicago with a B.A. in Business Administration.

My career includes positions with two transportation companies and four Public Relations agencies. At these agencies I specialized in Business-to-Business communications.

As an entrepeneur I founded three publishing companies. Two produced books and one published a newsleter.

English

My background includes writing 11 published books, and the scripts for two videos. I have taught University courses in Public Relations in which written and spoken English were most important. I have also taught courses in Film and Video where the term paper made up a substantial portion of the final grade.

In my other career as a Public Relations account supervisor, I used my skills in English every day to the great benefit of my clients.

Film

I have college teaching experience and hands-on practical experience in film and video. At Northeastern Illinois University I taught a course in The Art of Film and Video. I have written video scripts, shot videos. done voice-over narration, and edited videos.

I have also worked extensively in 35mm film-based and digitally-based still photography. I have been a member of the Professional Photographers of America and the Chicago Gallery of Photography.

Government & Politics

My interest in Government and Politics began in high school, where I was the only student in my graduating class to score 100 on the state-mandated civics exam.

At the University of Chicago, I was a full-tuition Victoria Adams History Scholar.

I later reported for The Brief, a Chicago-based legal newspaper covering Constitutional issues. I was also a member of the American Judicature Society.

Grammar

Grammar is the framework upon which you build everything you write. Correct grammar in everything you write is proof that you have mastered an important writing skill.

Poor grammar not only provides a weak framework for your writing, it also causes a reader to doubt your knowledge of your subject matter.

Once you have mastered grammar it will remain with you as a lifelong skill.

Literature

As an avid reader of both American and English literature, I have developed a lifelong love for them both.

I would like to share my knowlege of and love for this literaure with my students.

I've found that reading fictional works can inspire and guide your own writing, even though you may write only non-fiction.

Photography

I have an extensive background in still, motion picture, and digital photography. From shooting with a film or digital camera through darkroom or digital editing I have mastered every aspect of photography.

My background encompasses both the technical and artistic aspects of photography. My still photo credits include Chicago Magazine, The Brief (a Chicago legal newspaper), and many books. My videos include three long features on travel subjects.

Proofreading

As a magazine editor, university teacher, public relations executive, and author of 11 books, I know the critical importance of proofreading as the final step in quality control.

Proofreading goes beyond careful attention to grammar and vocabulary. It touches on matters of style and tone.

I have learned how to preserve a writer's voice while eliminating errors in the mechanics of writing solid English prose.

Public Speaking

I have spoken before audiences ranging from university students, business executives, and members of service clubs such as Rotary International.

I have also appeared on a half-dozen Chicago radio and TV stations for interviews.

Journalism students at Northwestern University selected me as one of the top ten public speakers in Chicago.

I have also trained hundreds of business executives and university students in public speaking techniques.

Reading

Reading is the key to success in college. Entering and current students alike require a high level of reading comprehension.

In addition to my Certification in Reading I have Certifications in the closely related fields of Writing, English, Grammar, Literature, and Vocabulary.

The author of 11 books, I have taught hundreds of students and business executives how to increase their reading skills.

SAT Reading

Reading is the key to success in college. With this in mind, the SAT test requires a high level of reading comprehension.

In addition to my Certification in SAT Reading I have Certifications in the closely related fields of SAT Writing, English, Grammar, Literature, and Vocabulary.

The author of 11 books, I have taught hundreds of students and business executives how to increase their reading skills.

SAT Writing

Writing is so important that some colleges require underperforming students to take Remedial Writing classes -- but those students no longer get academic credit for those courses.

Some colleges now place emphasis on Writing across the entire spectrum of courses. Writing instruction is no longer confined to the English Department.

Writing is a key to sucess in college. With this in mind, the SAT test requires you to show a high level of writing ability.

In addition to my Certification in SAT Writing I have Certifications in the closely related fields of SAT Reading, English, Grammar, Literature, and Vocabulary.

The author of 11 books, I have taught hundreds of students and business executives how to increase their writing skills.

Vocabulary

Excellent writing begins with a powerful vocabulary. Mark Twain said that the difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightning and a lightning bug.

As a magazine editor, university teacher, and public relations agency account supervisor, I have helped hundreds of writers and students improve their vocabularies. As the author of 11 books, I have used the power of exactly the right words to strengthen my own writing.

Writing

There is nothing as powerful as a well-written article, term paper, corporate report, magazine article, or book. As the author of hundreds of magazine articles and 11 books -- and as a teacher and trainer of hundreds of students -- I have developed a distinctive personal style.

I can help you become a better writer while strengthening your own unique written personality on each page you produce.
