Experienced English Teacher and Baseball Coach

I am a teacher, an actor, a coach, and an athlete. I have spent the past nine years teaching reading, writing, public speaking, and drama to middle and high school students. I love books as much as I love baseball!

I am certified in secondary English education and have a bachelor's degree in English. I have a master's degree in education and am six credits away from being a certified school administrator. I have been trained in IB curriculum, Common Core Standards and differentiated instruction at the University of Virginia. I was recently named a finalist for the 2012 Teacher of the Year Award in the Hilton School District in Western New York.

Grammar

During my nine years as an English teacher, I spent two of them teaching a course called Skills Lab, which focused solely on grammar and writing. Using proper grammar is extremely important when writing and speaking in formal and/or professional settings. Using both a whole language approach, as well as standard sentence diagramming, we will work on getting comfortable with the rules of grammar. We will also look at many examples of proper grammar to use as a guide.

Reading

I have been trained in literacy instruction and will use various reading inventories to help find the "just-right" text for a student. We will focus on active reading and on "The 7 Habits of Good Readers." Working with text at a student's instructional level will maximize their opportunity for growth in reading comprehension and fluency.

Writing is a form of communication that is vital to any profession or walk of life, but it can be tricky. Together we will focus on the appropriate language and structure for varying types of writing from basic sentence structure to analytical essays. I have a BA in English and am passionate about great literature. It is the reason I became an English teacher. I take a concept-based approach when studying literature in order make the big ideas in any book applicable to the world we live in.

Howdy! The reading section of the SAT can be tedious and tricky. BUT, with the right preparation, you will be able to shine on this part of the test. A major part of your success on the SAT will be determined by how comfortable you feel with its format. By using activities similar to what you see on the SAT, your anxiety will drop and your score will rise!

ACT Reading

Be an ACTive Reader!

The Reading section of the ACT can be tedious, but practicing some simple strategies will help your score rise. We will work on eliminating the obvious wrong answers first, being CLOSE readers who pick up on the little details, and finding context clues to help with the hardest questions.

The thought of taking the ACT can fill a person with anxiety. The good thing is that we know how to prepare and we know what the test looks like. I have spent years helping students prepare for high stakes and standardized testing. Getting comfortable with the format is a major way to reduce stress and feel confident when entering the testing site.

Baseball

I am certified to coach baseball in New York State and have done so for nine years. I hold valid CPR/AED and First Aid certifications. I played baseball in high school and college, and know how to help players improve their skills both offensively and defensively. It will show on the field.

Public Speaking

I taught a public speaking elective and drama elective. I also have extensive experience performing and speaking in front of large groups of people. In addition, I have prepared students for the oral assessments that are part of IB Language & Literature course.

Regents

I have prepared New York State students for the Comprehensive English exam for 5 years. I understand the format, the rubrics, and know how to help kids get ready for it.
