I recently obtained a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Psychology from Western Michigan University (WMU). The main focus of WMU’s psychology program is Applied Behavioral Analysis. During my time at WMU, I was offered several practicum experiences where I would apply techniques I learned in the classroom to face-to-face interaction with the children who displayed signs of developmental and behavioral issues. The opportunity to work with these children gave me a valid lesson in effective problem solving. This experience created a foundation, which ultimately led me down a career path I hope to pursue within my graduate program at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. By applying these practices to real world situations, I hope that one day I can have a positive impact on the field of modern psychology.
As the children progressed each week on the sometimes shaky and often wavering road that constitutes their lives, something within me profoundly changed. This transformation had a tremendous impact on my personality and has helped shape the person I have become today. In my exploration to better understand developmental delays and disabilities in children, it became apparent that I began to develop a level of patience that I had not seen before. Prior to my practicum, patience was a trait I had previously lacked but always wanted to acquire. For the first time in my life, I became selfless in my actions so I could provide stable assistance to the children and their families.
I believe I am an exceptional candidate for a tutoring position because I work diligently with others and yet have the aptitude to work successfully with little to no guidance. I have proven, based on past experience, to be highly adaptable and well organized with a strong work ethic. Lastly, I possess an open-mind with a degree of ingenuity that allows me to be somewhat unconventional, yet work within set standards. I believe this is what truly sets me apart from other applicants.
I aspire to pursue a career in the field of behavior analysis, which will allow me to mature in all aspect of my life. If I were to reflect on myself in future years, I want to be able to affirm that I not only lived my life to my full potential but my enthusiasm and devotion were proven to be effective on the lives I encountered. I refuse to be another person who insensitively passes through life, existing. I want to love my career, which in return will also allow me to flourish.
Pursuing my education and developing a more concrete understanding of the psychological practices set in place by pioneers of the field will not only further my education but will ultimately serve the individuals I will one day treat. I can assure my audience that day in and day out my unyielding passion for psychology will assert itself in my work ethic.
