I hold a Master of Fine Arts from Northwestern University’s Writing for the Screen + Stage program, and a Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts from Sarah Lawrence College. While studying at Northwestern, I had the privilege and pleasure of teaching two Foundations of Screenwriting courses to NU undergraduates. Those first forays into teaching were delightfully challenging, immensely rewarding, and awoke in me a passion for teaching that is on par with my passion for writing. Since completing my studies, I have sought out opportunities that combine these two passions in the form of tutoring and writing consultation.

Currently, I tutor within the full spectrum of humanities and social sciences, but concentrate on exercising and expanding upon my students’ command of the English language generally, and their creative and expository writing skills specifically. Whether the goal is to complete a writing assignment for World History class or prepare for a short-essay test on 18th Century Romantic Poetry, not only do we work together on their ability to articulate their ideas with proper grammar, syntax and dynamic vocabulary, but we also work together on improving their critical thinking abilities, reading comprehension, research techniques, organization methods, revision and editing proficiency, and time-management skills.

As a tutor, I feel that my responsibility is not only to assist my students with their current schoolwork, but also to hone and cultivate the skills they will need to succeed on their own in college, the work place, or anywhere else that their dreams may take them. As a writing consultant, I feel that my responsibility is to hone and cultivate the arguments and the language elements used to make them in thesis papers, dissertations, college application essays, cover letters, articles and creative works all with the same objective as in tutoring: to guide potential through the growth process so far as the student is willing to work through it.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Film

My Bachelor's degree from Sarah Lawrence is in Liberal Arts; however, my concentrations were in Screenwriting and Film History, meaning that I took at least one class in at least one of those subjects every semester for all four years. Also, my MFA from Northwestern is in Writing for the Screen & Stage, and the curriculum included heavy analysis of films, television shows, and plays. Moreover, I taught Foundations of Screenwriting for two quarters as part of my MFA program at Northwestern.

Grammar

"Grammar Snobs Are Great Big Meanies!" That's the title of my favorite grammar book, and let's be real here, we all know it's true. On the other hand, a thorough knowledge and handling of English grammar is essential in today's world no matter what your interests. With it comes an ability to articulate one's self, and communicate effortlessly with people from all social strata. I am passionate about the sanctity of the English language, but I remember not to be a meanie about it!

I've often been caught sitting in my pj's in the middle of the day, eating a ball of port wine cheddar (sans crackers) while in the midst of a movie marathon. No, it doesn't look like I'm doing much, but I'm actually writing. How can that be, you ask? Well, every time I watch a film I am actively watching it, analyzing it, critiquing it, figuring out what works, what doesn't work, and how and... read more
