I want to be a tutor so that I may guide our future by helping to mold, support and encourage my students academically, socially and emotionally. I love seeing the enjoyment and pride that comes from a child learning.I am obtaining my special education endorsement as well as a Master's Degree in Elementary Education.
Why do I want to teach? It certainly isn’t for the fame or fortune but it is rather for a more simple reason, a pure reason; I love the journey of learning. I can thank my oldest child, for allowing me to fully realize and accept the joy I find in educating young minds. His learning journey, thus far, has not been easy for him. In fact together we have faced many obstacles; in the way he learns, thinks, and processes information. Yet despite such struggles, he has made many accomplishments. He has shown me how important it is to respect students as individuals, understand that everyone has the ability to learn, and that we all learn at different paces as well as, in different styles. It is truly the competent teacher that can embrace these ideas.
I love learning from children. I have never viewed education as a one sided deal. I believe that a teacher who listens and engages her students can learn just as much, if at times, not more than, the curriculum at hand from them. I have a background in counseling and social services and cannot stress how imperative I believe good communication can be. I want to make a difference in my students’ lives. I want them to know that I am not in the there for them only to guide them through the everyday challenges of learning and expounding on new material, but to understand, acknowledge who they are, and support them as individuals too. I will never demand respect for my students but rather earn it by showing them through my actions and words that I view them as being important in my life as well.
As far as my tutoring style is concerned, that is determined by the person I am tutoring. Everyone has a different learning style therefore I am flexible with my teaching style. I believe in only positive reinforcement, and a setting in which a student is set up for success not failure. It is my goal to build self confidence and independence in my students.
