My more than 20 years of work experience includes teaching English in China to adult professionals, years of substitute teaching in Chicago public high schools, teaching remedial writing classes to college students, and working as a tutor in Northeastern Illinois University's writing lab. I have also worked for many years as a freelance business writer and editor.

I find working one-on-one with students to help them figure out how to craft an essay to be extremely satisfying work. My goal is to encourage them to find their own voices as writers within the structures of the academic essay. Guitar

I have played guitar for over twenty years (both acoustic and electric). I studied music at DePaul University's school for continuing education, where I learned the fundamentals of music theory. While I would never pretend to have a mastery of classical or jazz styles, I have a strong understanding of chord theory and rhythm. In short, I can help anyone who wants to have fun with popular and rock styles.

Study Skills

As a graduate of Northwestern University (1991) and a master's degree student at Northeastern Illinois University (2012), I feel comfortable helping students with time management and study skills. In 2007, I worked for EF Beijing both as an English teacher for professionals, and as a presenter of the EF Englishtown product for prospective clients. Public speaking can be an intimidating enterprise for beginners, but with a few key tips, presenters can approach their audiences with confidence.
