As a one-on-one ESL tutor I create pathways through the difficult process of learning something unfamiliar. Many subjects are unfamiliar and foreign to us. My job is recreate them into everyday knowledge. It is a journey into the unknown but my mentor ship is the seat belt on the ride. As a Youth program leader at Chicago Cares, Inc. I have first hand experience with fun learning. My students and I use hands-on activities to make learning easy. My students are greatly enthused as we cross the Delaware River as George Washington. We will create scenarios and role play. When you are the leader, you take ownership of the lesson. We can be Lewis and Clark, Paul Revere, or today's leaders. A definition is defined by our actions. Bingo squares come alive as we put pennies on names and places. As a political scientist (M.A. in Political and Justice Studies), I am as greatly interested in history and people. What makes government work? It's a building exercise. Goods become toys that are traded for money and eventually we pay taxes.

At Lavizzo Elementary School, I led a World's Fair project to present children with international knowledge. We created stations with learning crafts, games and activities. Kids learned about Native Americans as we played a "soccer" game. They learned about India when we created Henna tattoos. Let's get interactive.

Blended learning is a great way for my student and I to delve into 21st Century tutoring. Let's get the iPad and apps out. Can we find a game that we can use as a base for question and answer exercises? My student can build points in Angry Birds if he/she can answer questions correctly. We can take vocabulary quizzes on Dave's ESL Cafe.

Children learn by using every tool available to them. When I teach my ESL class we use news stories and internet activities to learn more about a subject. We will watch a short news clip on the upcoming election. Then we vote for who we think will win. I want to mentor my students as well as teach them. Let's find the activities and patterns that make for successful learning. One-on-one tutoring will allow me to pinpoint your needs and manageable ways to use them. Success is in sight when someone finds what you need and how to use it. I believe my experiences and educational background will encourage, motivate and support the success of your child and his/her learning experience.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have one-on-one and class instruction experience with conversation. I use blended learning by combining conversation with media events such as computer clips of the news or subjects relevant to my student. I enable students to perfect their English with fun activities that make students comfortable with English and conversation. One of my students favorites is "ESL conversation" Bingo. I create Bingo cards that have names, places or events instead of numbers. Then as we play the game we must discuss the subject on the Bingo card. It's great fun!!!

My teaching methodology is based on conversation research on particular sounds different ethnicities must master to create conversation. These studies and online websites/activities are combined.

GED

Student success is my success. This is the motto I bring to my current GED students. I have been a GED tutor for adults for over one year. My experiences are with a diverse group of students and their diverse needs. I approach every student as an individual with particular needs for success. My strength lies in pinpointing my students obstacles and creating pathways to overcome them.

My educational experience spans from Business to Political Science to Social Justice. These experiences allow me great insight into the many deeper aspects of any subject. History includes many social, political and economic elements that when combined tell the larger story. I have study skill experience which I personalize for each student. If a student is good in math I carry this into their lessons on other subjects. We can use addition, subtraction and multiplication to tell many aspects of English and history. By adding a prefix or suffix, we make new words. Teaching GED is all about creating lessons that are based on student strengths.

I believe that my diverse experience with education, teaching and people make me a perfect fit for your needs. Please feel free to contact me regarding any and all questions you may have.
