Dynamic results: Writing, Reading, Test Prep Expertise

I'm excited to be a part of WyzAnt tutoring and coaching! I've been tutoring in the Chicagoland area for over twenty years. My expertise is in writing, reading, and study skills. As an instructor of rhetoric and writing at DePaul University for fifteen years as well as a long-time student of educational counseling practices, I have developed personalized consulting and tutoring that assesses the student's needs, performance anxieties, and abilities to improve.

Additionally, my strengths lie in English literature and making many of the classroom demands easier for the student to understand.

My background is also in theatre, improvisation, and design. I have performed professionally as an actor in Chicago for over twenty-five years in commercials, theatre, and film. I have coached young actors in improvisation, acting, and public speaking. So much of my performance background has added to my overall philosophy and execution of tutoring and student development.

My experience and dedication to my work has elevated student confidence, performance, and standardized test scores, allowing students to increase their chances for higher grades and acceptance to colleges of their choice.

Grammar

As a trained grammarian, I enjoy unpacking the sentence for students so they can better understand what they already know! As studies have shown, doing well on a grammar test is not necessarily the key to more effective writing and comprehension. I help students, however, see how their language works and along the way introduce them to grammar and style to overall better performance.

Writing

As a writer myself, I know the difficulty in crafting an organized thought onto the page (screen). My background in teaching of writing begins as a consultant at a handful of writing labs at the college level, including DePaul University, my current teaching post.

I have my undergraduate degree in English and American literature from the University of Illinois. I have taught introductory courses in literature (fiction and non-fiction)at the college level for over ten years with my primary discipline being writing and composition.

Literature

My undergraduate degree is in American and English literature. I have tutored high school students in AP and accelerated college prep courses as well as college students in the understanding of and writing about literature. This has often been the bulk of my tutoring practices with students in need of assistance.

Proofreading

Proofreading is a part of my larger expertise in writing and reading. As a writing instructor at DePaul University, I assess essays and text daily. My background as a grammarian also helps with my proofreading skills and ability to teach it as well.

I can edit and/or proofread copy for students of all levels (7th grade to graduate school and professionals). My rates for straight proofreading are somewhat dependent on the assignment but quite negotiable.

ACT English

I've been tutoring students in ACT test prep for over fifteen years, and I've had tremendous success in elevating English scores, both in reading and writing.

Much of my expertise lies in enhancing confidence and understanding for the student. The test is often "mis-taken" and time is used poorly, often leading to undesirable results.

If I can provide tools to make the student tackle the test more proactively and effectively, than I know I can generate better results.

Theatre

I have been a professional actor for twenty-five years. I have been part of the Screen Actors Guild as well as the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists.

My training is in improvisation with Second City and Improv Olympic. I studied under Del Close. I then worked as a stage actor in Chicago while continuing as a commercial, television, and industrial actor.

Drawing

I studied at the American Academy of Art (now the Illinois Institute of Art) for two years, focusing on human/life drawing and illustration. My expertise is in charcoal, pencil, and pen. I freelanced as an illustrator and have sold several charcoal portraits and drawings. I am versed in color theory and composition, architectural rendering, and use of light and dark.

Public Speaking

As a professional actor for twenty-five years, with a background in improvisation, stage, and on-camera acting, my expertise can help students of all ages.

I've been teaching writing and rhetoric at DePaul University for fifteen years, so my ability to engage multiple audiences also adds to my approach.

With a background of proven practice and theory of public speaking, I hope to help those who need to speak for myriad reasons.
