I have an M.A. from the University of Chicago in Philosophy. I currently teach English, Humanities, and Philosophy classes at Calumet College of St. Joseph and Harold Washington College. I'm also a graduate of Cornell College, specializing in Philosophy, History and Music Performance/Theory. I love teaching students how to write! Whether it's a term paper, a standardized test essay, or a job/school application, I can help you turn your great ideas into very effective writing.

I am interested in all kinds of subjects, but, other than writing, I specialize in teaching private writing and music lessons to players of all ages. I have been a music instructor on low brass instruments (Euphonium, Baritone, Trombone, Tuba), for four years now. Music lessons should be something to look forward to each week, and I am dedicated to making every lesson count. Too often music teachers rely on the student to put in all of the effort and just spend their time checking off assignments. I believe that every minute I spend with a student should be fruitful to both of us.

I also believe in making lessons a fun experience for the student. I reserve some time each lesson for my students to pick what they want to work on. I am well versed in a variety of styles, including classical, jazz, rock, ska and more! If you are looking to learn a new instrument, pick up some new skills on the instrument that you already play, move to first chair, learn a solo for contest, or even learn how to read music for the first time, I look forward to working with you very soon!

If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

General Music

I have taken music theory I-V at Cornell College, where I learned solfege, ear training techniques, all major and minor scales, composition of motives, how to resolve cadences, proper musical phrasing, and how to resolve. I can also read bass clef, treble clef, Bb treble clef, Eb treble clef, and tenor clef. I am proficient in the trombone, the euphonium, the trumpet, the guitar, the bass guitar, the ukulele, and the quads (cello) steel drum. I am also versed in jazz, rock (classic rock, independent rock, punk rock, alternative rock), pop, and classical music. Together, these make me certified in general music.

Trombone

I have been playing trombone and euphonium for 15 years and have taught the instruments for 4 years. I was 1st chair trombone in the Cornell College jazz ensemble, 1st chair euphonium in the Cornell College wind ensemble, principle baritone and 2nd euphonium in the Eastern Iowa Brass Band, part of the horn section of a number of cover bands, and part of Open Mic Night at The Amore jazz club in Seattle, WA. I have taught beginner through college level student in a variety of styles, including classical and jazz. I have also taught the following techniques: lip slurring, double tonguing, proper stylistic articulation, proper embouchure, proper care of the instrument, and more.
