Hello out there! My name is Sandy.
First things first, what is my approach to tutoring? Well, it all starts with building a rapport and trust between myself and the student. In my years of experience tutoring division 1 student-athletes I have learned that before anyone can have confidence in overcoming academic obstacles, they need to have confidence in themselves and allow themselves to ask questions and speak up when things don't make sense. Once the rapport and trust is built, the learning begins. My strategy with a new student is to asses what learning and study style works best for the individual. Whether (you) the students needs visual presentations, detailed verbal explanations, something tactile or by supplemental reading
, together I work with the student to figure out what is going to be successful.
After setting the student up for success, I look for ways to make the material more than just school work. I use stories, pictures, acronyms, videos and supplemental facts to bring the topic to life. This approach allows the student to invest in the material. Once the student cares for the information, studying becomes less intimidating and retaining the information becomes "possible". The final steps are to create practice tests and develop an in-class strategy.
The objective is to provide scaffolding until the student is able to stand on his/her own in the learning environment. The role of the tutor is to be a temporary figure, not a permanent crutch. Academic independence is the ultimate goal. With my enthusiasm, approach and experience matched by your commitment and hard work, the results will be seen in no time!
The second part of this profile is about my other work experience and background: I recently moved back to Massachusetts after living in Florida and on a cruise ship for the past 12 years. After chasing the sun for so long, I have decided to come home and do what I love near the people I love (my family and closest friends). I have traveled to over 35 countries in my work experience and have many interesting stories to tell which will help you while we study. The additional interesting facts and stories will make Geography
and Social Studies
come alive, allowing you to be a better, more interesting student who is ready for the classroom!
I am an energetic, enthusiastic and funny, (if I do say so myself) person who is great with kids and adults. To assure you of my people skills, let me tell you about my work history
outside of tutoring. My most recent job was Recreation Manager at the Nickelodeon Hotel in Orlando, Florida, where I get to slime people and hang out with SpongeBob and friends on a daily basis. Before that I ran the on-board youth programs for a major cruise line. I traveled to new places every day and played silly games at night for 4 years! My background in recreation makes me an even better tutor now, because I incorporate activity into the learning process. This livens up the hour as well as makes learning and studying enjoyable. There is no reason for learning to be boring. Life if full of interesting facts and places. It would be my pleasure to spend some time with you (or your student, if you are a parent researching tutors) to share my knowledge and love of learning about the many diverse and intriguing cultures, people, languages and places of the world.
