I recently earned a M.A. in Geography & Environmental Studies. My background is basically in liberal arts. I've signed up to be a tutor of English and Geography as I've taught English as a foreign language (EFL) in South Korea for a year and have considerable experience with geographical information systems (GIS). Before departing to Korea I received a EFL certificate from an organization here in Chicago after 120 hours of training and tutoring. The tutoring was volunteered at the Chinese Mutual Aide Association to Chinese immigrants.
In the past I have spent considerable time in Germany studying and living which allowed me to become an advanced speaker (with hardly an American accent, as I learned from people more than books). The German I speak is colloquial and I am able to tutor at a beginners to intermediate level.
As far as English or German, my tutoring methods include reading, speaking and writing. Grammar is highlighted but is not necessarily separated from the three. Rather, I integrate the grammar into the speaking and writing exercises. Since the tutor sessions typically last from an hour to an hour 1/2, I consider this a logical step unless the student requests or has specific questions.
Through my studies and travels I have immersed myself in history and geography. That said, I am knowledgeable in these two subjects to a considerable degree and feel capable in addressing these areas should there be students who require help.
