ACT English

I have been teaching ACT Prep courses in high school for over 20 years, along with tutoring students on an individual basis. I am a College English Composition, Literature, Speech and Psychology Instructor and have been teaching on the college level for over seven years. I am up to date on any changes that the ACT is making in its Grammar, Composition and Literature short answer questions, along with the Writing required by the ACT and its new Essay. I have a great track record of students who have scored very well in the ACT as a result of my teaching and private tutoring, and am able to supply great personal references.

ADD/ADHD

About fifty percent of the students I taught over the 20 years I was employed as a high school classroom English teacher for the NYC Board of Education had some form of ADHD ad I have many years of experience modifying my lesson plans to accomodate the learning styles of the ADHD. My elder daughter tested positive for ADHD, so I have personal experience with ADHD not only as a professional educator, but also as a parent. Frankly, ADHD was not part of the vocabulary when I was in high school, but I am almost certain that I would have been diagnosed with ADHD had it been when I was in school.

Bible Studies

I attended Union Theological Seminary at Columbia University as an Education major on the Presbyterian Ordination track for the Master of Divinity degree.

Classics

In high school I was a college prep major. In my bachelor's studies I enjoyed a double major of Theatre and English. I took 37 credits in English, along with the required Science, Math, Government, foreign language and Science classes for a Bachelor's degree. I have studied Latin for two years and have taken College French; I read, write and converse in French. I have studied Religion, Theology, Ethics, Education, Psychology, Pastoral Counseling, Speech, Communication and English in my graduate degrees and have a vast knowledge of Theatre and English, which I obtained as a student, theatre professional and educator for over twenty years.

English

I have taught English, Literature, Speech, English Composition, Theatre and Psychology in high school and college for over twenty years, and have been tutoring in these subjects for over seven years.

I have two master's degrees in English and Education, and attended an ivy league university. My undergraduate degree as a double major in English and Theatre is from a renown Performing Arts SUNY (State University of New York) college.

ESL/ESOL

I have taught English and Composition to students in inner city schools in NYC and El Paso, TX for over twenty years where English is their second language from grades 5-f12, as well as five years of College, where most of my students were English as a Second Language learner.

Film

In my undergraduate degree I studied Film and Literature, and during my studies for my undergraduate degree in Theatre, I viewed, studied, commented upon, attended lectures and wrote papers on many films, including the recognized classics. During my Master's degree in English, I studied, attended lectures and wrote papers on many films in conjunction with many of the works of Literature and Theatre I studied. During my professional work as a theatrical director, producer and lighting and set designer, I researched many films to become more fully informed in these positions. For over 30 years I have attended so many films that it would not be a stretch to say that I have attained a significant classical background and knowledge of several major genres in film.

GED

I have been teaching high school English, Speech, Literature, and Social Studies, along with college Composition, Speech, Literature and Psychology for over 20 years. I have two Master's degrees in English and Education beyond my Bachelor's in Theatre and English (double major) and am able to tutor students to confidently pass the GED and go on with their life plans, either in the professional world or to obtain further training in specific skills or college. I'm also a lot of fun and, with my theatre background, am able to generate a sense of joy and play that always accompanies my work with my ESL students.

Grammar

I have been teaching for over 20 years in high school and college English Composition, which always includes significant time spent on proper American Standard English.

Literature

I have taught American, English and World Literature in college and high school for over 20 years.

Philosophy

I attended Union Theological Seminary at Columbia University in pursuit of the Master of Divinity degree, and studied on the Presbyterian Ordination Track as an Education major. I took all of the philosophy and theology courses required to obtain the Master of Divinity degree.

Proofreading

I have taught English Composition on a college and high school level, and own my own Editing, Writing and Proofreading business, where I have worked as an Editor, Writer, Proofreader and Ghostwriter for over 20 years.

Public Speaking

With my professional acting training from The Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in NY, NY, as well as my professional Theatre experience producing, directing and performing on stage, along with my Bachelors in Theatre and over twenty years of teaching Speech, English and Theatre in high school and college, I have tutored and coached professional speakers, actors, and students for over thirty years.

Reading

I have been teaching Reading and English for over 20 years in high school and college and am a published writer. My political journalism is currently available on line to read, and I have written a novel, one full length play and two one act plays.

I am certified in the State of IL and NY state permanently as an English Language Arts teacher. I love children and they almost always enjoy me very much. I have a theatre background and am able to make learning enjoyable and challenging. Reading was a great solace of mine when I was a child, and to this day nothing makes me happier than curling up with a good book and reading.

I am also able to teach children how to enjoy reading, and tap into the benefits reading provides for us in terms of a child's sense of play, imagination, fantasy, creativity, along with the obvious practical aspects of reading, as we learn how to write standard English correctly by reading it.

My performance art skills enable me to add a performance-enhanced quality to the oral reading I bring to my students, which all children love; thus, I am able to bring the stories we read alive, which creates and sustains their interest in learning, reading and writing.

Regents

I took the New York State Regents exam and scored so well that I was awarded a full scholarship to an ivy league college, where I began my bachelor's degree.

Religion

My last graduate work was at Union Theological Seminary at Columbia University in NYC, where I sudied on the Presbyterian Ordination Track, and took the required Theology I and II, Ethics I & II, Religion, in depth Psychology and Pastoral Counseling in pursuit of the Master of Divinity degree.

SAT Reading

I have been teaching high school and college English Composition, Reading, Literature and Speech for over 20 years, along with tutoring my English and Composition students for the SAT's in English and Writing, and have been privately tutoring SAT Reading and Writing Preparation classes for over 10 years.

SAT Writing

I have been teaching high school and college English Composition, Reading, Literature and Speech for over 20 years, along with tutoring my English and Composition students for the SAT's in English and Writing, and have been privately tutoring SAT Reading and Writing Preparation classes for over 10 years.

Sewing

I started sewing when I was 8 years old, and attended 4-H for eight years as a child, where most of our curriculum was sewing and preparing for County Fairs, and where we would also show our creations at the 4-H Exhibit, as well as participate in the County Fair's Fashion Show modeling our creations. I have been sewing since then, so that would be about over 40 years of sewing! I have made many of my own clothes, along with my children's clothes, sewn curtains, pillows, and I can actually make my own patterns. I sewed my own wedding dress, which was from a designer pattern, and very beautiful if I say so myself! I also sewed my children's Baptismal garments, which were also created from designer patterns, and included the blanket, classic Baptismal dress and long slip, hat and coat. I sewed many years of my daughters' Easter and Christmas dresses, their Halloween costumes and their Confirmation dresses, etc. I continue to love sewing and am currently working on a Donna Koran Vogue Designer dress.

Speech

I have taught Speech in high school, along with Theatre for many years, as well as in college, where I am qualified to teach Speech as a result of my many Theatre classes taken in professional acting school; as well as my Bachelor's degree in Theatre; my professional Theatrical experience (performance, directing, producing, design); along with the graduate credits in Speech and Communications I have taken in my graduate degrees.

Study Skills

I am an experienced high school teacher who also teaches in college, and I bring my study skills that I have additionally taught to my college students, because all students either need to learn study skills, or be updated on their study skills to be prepared for the challenges students face in their studies.

I have also tutored study skills and SAT/ACT preparation classes for over seven years on an individual basis. I am also able to share my experiences in the prepatory classes I took for the major professional and advanced education exams I have taken in my professional and academic life: the SAT's, the ACT, the LSAT, the GRE, the NTE and the PRAXIS exams, which I have also shared with my college and high school students in my teaching career.

Theatre

I attended The Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in NY, NY where I studied acting from Sanford Meisner, one of the most influential Theatre teachers in American Theatre and his protege, William Esper, and later went on to study advanced acting with William Esper at his private studios in NYC. I obtained a Bachelors in Theatre from SUNY, Purchase, the legendary Theatre School of the SUNY system, where many shows that end up on Broadway are previewed at this school. I own and operate my own theatrical production company, Patron Saints Productions, where I have been producing, directing and designing/directing lights, sets and costumes in stage productions for the last twelve years. I have over thirty years of directing, performing and producing classical theatre in New York, New Mexico, Texas and Minnesota. I have written two plays, one with the same name and adapted from my novel, MONSTERS AND ANGELS, which I wrote with the support of the Playwrights Center of Minneapolis, a national theatre organization and resource for playwrights and theatre professionals in the United States, continue to work on the writing and technical aspects of its eventual production.

TOEFL

I have tutored students for the TOEFL and IELTS for the last five years both here in Chicago and NYC, in Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. I have written a novel, two plays and own my own writing and editing free lance business for over 10 years, and where I continue to work with individual clients on their writing and editing projects.
