If your child is considered "not ready to read" and is in a "readiness" program, or if he/she simply isn't learning to read, it is very likely I can teach your child to read from Day 1. I use a Multi-Modal Approach to teach beginning sight vocabulary. There is no drilling on words. As I teach children vocabulary, I immediately put that vocabulary into sentences and your child reinforces his understanding by drawing the meaning. This is a "meaning" approach, not a rote drill approach. I love teaching children to read. They are totally involved and love learning.
If your child has sight vocabulary and cannot get the "hang" of sounding out words, I have a unique approach to teaching children to blend the sounds. It is successful where the conventional methods often fail. There is no drill on phonics. All they need is some sight vocabulary, and I will quickly teach the short vowel sounds. Then we begin blending the sounds together -successfully - with my unique approach. Your child may be older and still can't sound out words?? Teaching him/her is usually successful using my approach.
I taught primary grades for many years. I have tutored in reading. I led a team of teachers to teach beginning reading using my approach. I have a Masters of Arts Degree in Curriculum Development. I have written a book documenting my Multi-Modal Approach to Teaching Sight Vocabulary as well as a book on how to teach the sounding out of words.
I live in downtown Chicago and would prefer to tutor at the Chicago Public Library or at the Cultural Center. Or, I will travel a few miles.
