I love helping others learn. I've been fortunate enough to develop strong skills in writing, English as a second language, and Spanish, and I would welcome the opportunity to assist students as they seek to develop these talents.

There are few things more rewarding than helping others learn. I first experienced the joy of teaching while working as a writing tutor at the Colgate University Writing Center. We all know what it's like to get writer's block or to need a hand getting our words down on paper. As a writing tutor, I would meet with undergraduate students in personalized tutoring sessions, and together we would tackle any writing challenges the student was facing, ranging from idea development to grammar and editing. On any given day I might assist students with organizing ideas for a molecular biology paper, developing a thesis about the role of women in Homer's Odyssey, or brainstorming about Freudian psychology. The intellectual challenge was great, and my students often taught me just as much as I was teaching them.

My love of teaching and tutoring inspired me to become a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in Bucaramanga, Colombia. As an English Teaching Assistant, I taught high school and university students the intricacies of the English language. I also spent significant time tutoring Colombian students and professionals in English so they could pursue opportunities in the United States. Additionally, I immersed myself in Colombia culture in order to build upon the Spanish degree I received from Colgate University in 2010.

To me, the most important thing about writing and language tutoring is helping the student develop creative confidence. Tutoring sessions must go beyond mere repetitive study of grammar; students should be given the opportunity to use the language in a more natural and organic context. We learn the language once we actually try to communicate. That is why I tend to incorporate speaking, games, and critical thinking activities into my lessons, on top of the necessary grammar study.

My past teaching and tutoring experiences have taught me that there must be excellent working relationships between students and tutors. I enjoy establishing good rapport with students so that we may collectively work towards achieving their learning goals. It is a great joy of mine to work with people in this capacity, regardless of experience level, age, or gender. Simply put, I love to learn and to help others learn.

Corporate Training:

During the 2010-2011 academic year, I served as a U.S. Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in Bucaramanga, Colombia.

I worked closely with Colombian-born English teachers, assisting them with their high school and university level English classes. I focused on explaining the intricacies of English grammar, as well as developing fun and exciting games which would give the students a chance to use their new English skills.

Additionally, I independently taught medical/technical English to nurses and doctors at the Autonomous University of Bucaramanga's medical school. In these classes, I designed English lessons simulating medical situations the nurses and doctors might actually encounter in their professions.

I also held a weekly English Conversation Club for the students at the Autonomous University of Bucaramanga. In this club I would share aspects of United States culture, and create a space in which students could freely practice their English through games, puzzles, and other speaking activities.

Finally, I developed a clientele of 7-8 individuals to whom I administered private English lessons. These lessons ranged from introductory grammar/conversation, all the way up to advanced preparation for the TOEFL test.

I received a Bachelor's of Arts in Spanish from Colgate University in 2010 and was rewarded the David B. Jutton prize for Excellence in the Study of Romance Languages.

I have extensive experience speaking Spanish in a native context. While an undergraduate, I studied for a semester in Madrid at La Universidad de San Pablo CEU. I further improved my Spanish while living in Colombia for the 2010-2011 academic year, working as an English teacher.

Because I have been both a student and teacher of foreign language, I thoroughly understand the process of trying to develop language skills. I truly love Spanish, and would welcome the opportunity to help others learn this valuable skill.
