Patient and Energetic Tutor for K-6, Special Ed, and Music!

Hello, and welcome to my tutor page! I am a well educated, energetic, creative and caring tutor ready to work with your child! My undergraduate work in Brain and Cognitive Science cultivated in me a passion for working with growing minds, especially those who process differently. Additional coursework at National Louis University in Special Education has provided me a solid foundation on common accommodations and modifications for individualizing education, which I can use to develop a very specific and effective tutoring style to fit your child's needs. I was a member of Chicago Teaching Fellows, a prestigious organization through which I acquired my Provisional Alternative Special Teaching Certificate (Type 27), and I taught fourth-grade special education in Chicago for one year. As a teacher, I learned how important it is to think outside the box when preparing lessons, and I also learned a great deal about elementary curriculum. In addition, I have learned how important it is to provide a warm, supportive environment for students and to be patient throughout the learning process for the most growth to occur!

I also am experienced in the realm of music and would love to teach your child piano, general music, or tutor college students in their music theory or sightsinging coursework. I began piano lessons at the age of five and have always had a strong passion for music. In addition, I was also a music major in college and received high marks in all of my music theory, ear training, and history coursework. I taught Music and Drama at Ramapo for Children, a summer program for children with special needs, including autism, so I have learned how to make music a fun experience for all!

Reading

As a special education teacher, most of my day was spent teaching phonics and reading skills. Most of my experience teaching reading is for K-4, but I have had some experience teaching through the high school levels.

Elementary (K-6th)

As a fourth grade special education teacher in Chicago, I gained experience working with students with special needs, but I also became very familiar with elementary curriculum, since my students all had very different grade level equivalents. I have a provisional certificate for teaching K-12 as well.

Phonics

As an elementary special education teacher, I had many students who performed in reading far below grade level and required substantial work in phonics. I am familiar with various phonics-based reading programs, such as the Wilson Reading program and would be able to either continue at home with programs administered at school or introduce a new program in tutoring sessions. I have been playing the piano since I was five years old and have been in various competitions over the years. I have additional experience with accompaniment of choruses and soloists, in addition to playing in small pit bands. I was a music major in college and have a strong academic music background in addition to performance, which includes theory, history, and ear training.

Sight Singing

Study Skills

As a special education teacher in Chicago, I gained experience working with students with special needs. Many of my students struggled especially with study skills because they lacked organizational and self-regulation skills. I learned a great deal about how to help students with learning disabilities study, and I am confident in my ability to present a wide range of study skills that suit different students' individual needs.

Special Needs

As a special education teacher in Chicago, I gained experience working with students with special needs. My special education coursework involved discussion of the 14 categories of disability, so I am knowledgeable of appropriate accommodations and modifications for children with various diagnoses. I also worked at a residential summer program with children ages four through twenty-one, teaching and caring for a wide variety of special needs, including autism and severe cognitive disabilities.

ADD/ADHD

As a special education teacher in Chicago, I gained experience working with students with ADHD. My special education coursework involved discussion of this diagnosis, in addition to the other 13 categories of disability. I am knowledgeable of appropriate accommodations and modifications for children with ADD and ADHD.

Aspergers

As a special education teacher in Chicago, I gained experience working with students with Aspergers syndrome. My special education coursework involved discussion of this diagnosis, in addition to the other 13 categories of disability.
