I am a geophysics PhD student at the University of Chicago. My undergraduate degree is in physics, and I also have a minor in mathematics. I have peer tutored for an array of courses including: Calculus I, Calculus II, Intro Physics I, and Intro Physics II and have been the teaching assistant for introductory climate science courses. In addition, I have tutored high school students in mathematics classes including: Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, and Pre-Calculus.

When tutoring, I focus on making links between the subject material and real-world problems. When working with students in mathematics, I focus on helping the student understand the applications of the exercise in addressing and solving real-world challenges. This approach helps increase the student's enthusiasm in the work and the change in the perspective helps the student understand the problem from new and varied dimensions, resulting in an improvement in problem-solving techniques and strategies. In the sciences, I focus on addressing the subject matter first without mathematical equations or derivations, helping the student understand the fundamentals of the natural phenomena, and then I focus on how mathematical tools and equations can helpful in describing and determining fundamental characteristics of that phenomena. Once again, I have found that this approach helps connect students to the subject matter, transforming the, at first, seemingly abstract task into a more tangible problem. It also allows students to not only tackle the problems presented in class and in their homework, but it also provides a stronger foundation in the subject matter, allowing students to tackle new and more difficult problems than those seen previously in class or in homework assignments.

The aspect that I enjoy most about working with students is when a student begins to understand the fundamental principles of a subject that previously seems to that student to be a formidable and unpleasant challenge. When a student gains such an understanding, he or she transforms from dreading said subject to possessing an awe for the wonders of the subject and also the students gains a new-found self confidence and satisfaction. I would be very happy to help you develop a richer and fuller understanding of a math or science class that you find challenging!

Please contact me with any questions. During the day I will be attending classes and conducting research, but late afternoon and early evening hours are available.

Best regards,

Andrew

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
