I am an instructor proficient in the processes and software involved in filmmaking and photography. I also have extensive, daily experience with Mac and Windows OS, Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite. I have one year professional experience instructing and tutoring students in the use of film / video cameras and lights, DSLR cameras and the use of Final Cut Pro and other Apple post-production software. In addition to that, I spent most of my 3 years in art school helping and tutoring friends, fellow students and faculty in the use of equipment, applications and various workflows involved in their art practice. I am always learning new ways to do things on my own, and sharing that knowledge with others is essential to my process as an artist and professional.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Video Production

I have 3 years of intensive video and film production and post-production experience, both in college and as a professional.

Tutoring experience highlights:

-Video and audio equipment training experience - Worked for one year at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago authorizing students and faculty on the use of the school’s Media Center equipment pool. Sessions ranged from 1 - 8 students at a time, and my lesson plans ranged from a full beginners introduction to a “patching up” for students that already had some knowledge. At the end of every session the student was able to handle the equipment and display an obvious understanding of operation. In many cases I acted as project advisor to both undergraduate and graduate students in need of help with projects based on limited technical knowledge. These efforts resulted in a better learning experience for the student. Some equipment I had taught included the Canon 7D, Canon XHA1, professional lighting kits, video projectors, and various professional microphones and digital audio recorders.

-Video editing training experience - Worked for one year teaching the use of Final Cut Pro 7, Compressor and DVD Studio Pro at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. These sessions authorized students in the use of the school’s fully featured editing lab, which included HDV tape decks and Mac Pro towers equipped with the Final Cut Pro Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, Pro Tools LE, Blu-ray burners and other professional post-production software.

Video production experience highlights:

-Director of Photography / Camera Operator - Directed 4 to 5 camera shoots for live events. Worked as camera operator for short films and other freelance projects that include event documentation, interviews, and fashion designer promotion. Video camera equipment I have used includes Canon DSLR HD such as the 5D Mark 2 and 7D, as well as the XHA1 HDV Camera. I have also used Sony HDV cameras and the EX3, a full HD professional camcorder.

-Video editor / motion graphics animator - I have been editing video for the past 4 years, and have been using the Final Cut Pro Suite for the past 3 years for various independent productions and freelance professional work. I have worked professionally as a video editor and motion graphics animator for early childhood online education company Jinmaloo, and currently use Adobe Aftereffects to produce animation for companies. I also have an advanced understanding of post-production workflows that has resulted in the output of various formats suited to my clients and my own work. Formats range from exhibition-ready, uncompressed HD, to highly compressed but high-quality video uploaded and streamed on the internet, as well as pro-quality DVD and Bu-ray burning.

-Gaffer (lighting) - Have made final decisions on lighting packages for large shoots and directed the placement of lights based on scene set up. Experience with setting up and breaking down professional lights for film and video production, including Fresnel, spot and soft lights with various wattage’s. I have incorporated the use of gels, screens, scrims, flags and ‘cookies’ to color, shape, diffuse, and cut the light in order to perfectly fit the scene.

-Director / production coordinator - managed large and small crews, actors and extras to meet strict deadlines on-location and on sound stages. My ability to direct has been largely dependant on my interpersonal skills as well as my understanding of the individuals I had directed and the craft that they had been hired to utilize for the successful execution of film and video shoots. This also means that I will practice each craft before I am confident to tell someone else to do it for me.

-Other video production experience:

-Boom / shotgun mic operator
-Steadicam operator
-Sound mixing and mastering for stereo or 5.1 surround using a fully-equipped, professional Pro Tools HD mixing suite
-Camera dolly and tracks setup, operation and breakdown
